Description

(No Model.) n
, D. P. MULLINS.
GARMENT STRBTOHER; No. 373,027. Patented Nov. 8, 1887.
I UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
DANIEL P. MULLINS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DOUGLAS H. 'BERGH, OF SAME PLACE.
GARMENT-STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,027, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed April 28. 1887.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL P. MULLINs, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvernents in Garment-Stretchers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this I bodying my improved features; Fig. 2,21 transverse section in the plane 2, Fig. 1.
The upper end consists of duplicate transverse bars A A, and the lower end of the companion bars B B. The upper bars are adj ustably secured in relation to each other by means of the thumb-screws a a, the bars forming the lower end being secured in a similar manner by the thumb-screws a a The waist and legs of the pantaloons C are clamped between these ,0 bars, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig 1,
and shown in Fig. 2.
The outer ends of the system of toggle-levers D D D D are mounted on the thumb screws placed at the four corners of the de- 3 5 vice, which form a pivotal bearing for the same.
Normally these toggle-levers occupy a diagonal position relative tothe end bars and run inwardly in the direction of each other, as shown in Fig. 1. The inner or joining ends of 0 the levers D D overlap and are secured together by means of the thumb-screw I), while the joining ends of the companion levers D D are secured by the thu nib-screw b. The thumbscrews b 12 form pivotal bearings for thejoining ends 'of the toggle-levers, which, as they 5 are moved outwardly from each other, grow longer and strain or stretch the article clamped in the end bars.
The locking-brace E is arranged parallel to the plane of the clamping-bars A A and B B, one end of said brace being pivoted to the toggle-levers D D at their joint, and the other end provided with the slot (1 and having a lon-- gitudinal movement on the clamping-screw b,
which secures the brace in proper position at right angles to the toggle-levers, and provides means for holding the latter at any point to which they may be adjusted. This arrangement provides a very efficient, inexpensive,
and simple device for the purpose set forth. .60
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a garment-stretcher, the combination, with the clampingbars A A and B B, of the toggle-levers D 1) and D D, interposed between and secured to the respective ends of said clamps, the locking-brace E, arranged parallel to the plane of the clamp, and pivoted to one part of the toggle-levers at their joint, and provided with the elongated slot d, and the means described for adj ustably securing said brace to the other pair ottoggle-levers at ztheir joint, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
DANIEL P. MULLINS.
