Be it known that I, J AMEs EARLY BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homer, in the parish of Claiborne and State of Louisiana, h ave invented a new and usefulImprovement in Plows, of which the following is a specification. I

My invention relates to an improvement in plows; and it consists in the peculiar construc- Io tion and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed outin the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of portions of a plow embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 isa vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line x wot Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the socket or holder for connecting the handles to the plow-beam.

A represents a plow-beam of the usual construction, and B represents the handles,which .have their lower ends fitted in inclined recesses G, which are made in opposite sides of the beam at the rear end thereof. lHeretofore plow-handles have been commonly secured to the beam by transverse bolts, which pass through the handles and through the beam and serve to clamp the handles thereto. This mode of connecting the handles to the beam 3c is objectionable, for the reason that, owing to the strain to which they are subjected, the handles work loose upon the bolts and thelatter cut into the handles, so that after a time it is almost impossible to clamp the handles to the beam with a sufficient degree of rigidity.

rlhe object of my invention is to provide a means for connecting the handles to the beam so securely that the handles will not work loose thereon.

D represents a holder, which is made of a single piece of metal, preferably cast, and comprises a pair of inclined longitudinally-wedgeshaped sockets or keepers, E, which have their lower ends connected by a cross-plate, F. This l crossplate fits under the plow-beam, and the edges of the keepers or sockets E enter the recesses C in the sides of the beam, the vsaid sockets or keepers serving to envelope and shield the lower ends of the plow-handles and (No model.)

Avertical bolt, G, passes downward through the plow-beam and through the center of the plate F, and serves-to prevent the lower end of the holder from moving longitudinally on the beam, and a bolt, H, passes transversely through the keepers or sockets E through the beam at a point in rear of the opening O. This bolt H serves to effectually prevent the holder and the handles from working loose, and as the beam and the handles Shrink, which they Will do after a lapse of time, the nuts on the ends of the bolts maybe tightened, so as to keep the holder at all times iirmly clamped to the handles and to the beam.

iHaving thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the plow-beam having the inclined recesses C in opposite sides, with the handles having their lower ends tted in the said recesses, and the holder having the keepers or sockets E, to receive and cover the lower ends of the handles, the inner edges of the said keepers or sockets entering the recesses C, and the bolt H, passing transversely through the keepers,thehandles, andthe beam, for the purpose set forth, substantially as de scribed.

2. The combination of the plow-beam, the handles having their lower ends arranged on opposite sides ofthe beam, the holder having the keepers or sockets E, bearing against opposite sides of the beam and enveloping the lower ers and bearing under the beam, the bolt H, passing transversely through keepers,through the lower ends ofthe handles,and through the beam, and the bolt G, extending vertically through the beam and through the center of the plate F, substantially as described.
