Description

(No Model.)
S. W. COLE.
SAW MILL DOG.
flzverziar' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
SIDNEY W. COLE, OF CENTRE ROAD STATION, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-MILL DOG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,552, dated Catcher 18, 1887.
Application filed November 23, $6. Serial No. 219,730. (No model.) A
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY WV. COLE, of Centre Road Station, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Saw-Mill Dog, of which the following is a specification.
The invention will first be described in con nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front, and Fig. 2 a rear, elevation.
In the drawings, A represents the standard; 13, the dog; 0, a notched latch; D, a sliding head which carries the knife; E, a spring having a shoulder which engages the shoulder K on the head; F, a handle by which the head is raised; G, a ball on the top of Spring E; H, a stop on the upper end of standard, and J J stops at the lower end, whereby the up-anddown movement of the slide D may be regulated.
The latch O has notches C, C, and C, and handle 0, so that the notches may receive the pin L and hold the arm of dog B at any point to which it may be slid through the head D, thus adapting the position of the knife to the size of the sawlog. The standard has holes M. for convenience in attaching the dog to a knee.
The saw-log having been placed under the dog B, the workman presses the ball on the upper end of spring, when the latter ceases to support the head 1) and it descends with accelerating force, driving the knifeintothelog, where the weight of the head is quite sufficient to hold it. The spring works back and forth in the guide and keeper I on the standard.
I am aware that a sliding head has been provided with a pawl and combined with a ratcheted standard; but
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters .Patent, is
1. A saw-mill dog consisting of the standard A, head D, sliding thereon, a dog, B, on said head, and a spring, E, which engages a shoulder of head, whereby the head is supported and tripped, as described.
2. The combination, with the sliding head D, arranged on a standard and provided with asidepiu, L, of a dog, B, having a handle movable through said head, and a lever-latch, C C, pivoted .to one side of the dog-handle and having notches t0 fit' over said pin L, whereby the dog may be adjusted, as set forth.
