Abstract
A refuse container, which may be mounted on a vehicle, has an emptying hood provided with a charging screw which has its rotational axis located beside a vertical plane substantially parallel to said rotational axis, through the center of the emptying hood, as well as with an opening for manual loading of refuse. Said loading opening comprises a lowered loading ramp which is located on the opposite side of said vertical plane with respect to the charging screw and on a lower level than the inside of the bottom of the refuse container, to facilitate loading thereof.

Primary Examiner-Albert J. Makay Attorney-Cushman, Darby & Cushman [57] ABSTRACT A refuse container, which may be mounted on a vehicle, has an emptying hood provided with a charging screw which has its rotational axis located beside a vertical plane substantially parallel to said rotational axis, through the center of the emptying hood, as well as with an opening for manual loading of refuse. Said loading opening comprises a lowered loading ramp which is located on the opposite side of said vertical plane with respect to the charging screw and on a lower level than the inside of the bottom of the refuse container, to facilitate loading thereof.
7 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures PATENTEDJAN 23 I975 SHEET 3 1F 4 REFUSE CONTAINERS WITH AN EMPTYING HOOD AND A CHARGING SCREW This invention relates to improvements in preferably truck-mounted refuse containers having an emptying hood which is provided with a charging screw having an inclined rotational axis which is located beside a vertical plane substantially parallel to said rotational axis, through the center of the emptying hood, as well as with an opening for manual loading of refuse.
In such devices of the prior art the emptying hood,
the screw and a charging tube, in which the screw runs, usually have been substantially symmetrically located in relation to each other. This has entailed drawbacks at manual emptying, since it has required a comparatively high location of the opening provided for manual emptying.
The principal object of the invention is to eliminate these drawbacks and to provide a device of the abovementioned kind, which facilitates manual emptying of refuse and makes it less trying. This object is attained thanks to the fact that the loading opening comprises a lowered loading ramp which is located onthe opposite side of said vertical plane with respect to the charging screw and on a lower level than the inside of the bottom of the refuse container. Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following particular description and the accompanying drawings which diagrammatically and as a non-limiting example illustrate a preferred embodiment, and in which FIG. 1 illustrates a refuse truck in accordance with the invention, seen from behind;
FIG. 2 is a side-view, partly in section, of the rear portion of the refuse truck according to FIG. 1;
and FIGS. 3 and 4 are sectional views on the lines IlI-IlI and IV-IV, respectively, in FIG. 2.
In the drawings 1 designates a refuse truck on which a refuse container 2 is provided. 3 is an emptying hood associated with the refuse container. Within the scope of the invention, the emptying hood could very well constitute'an integral part of the container Zinste'ad of being a unit which could easily be separated from the container 2 and which is pivotable on a horizontal shaft 4 according to FIG. 2. In the lowermost portion of the emptying hood 3 there is provided a charging screw or impeller 5 known per se and suitably having a screw blade 6 which is inclined backwards-downwardsand preferably also tapers. in the direction towards the interior ofthe refuse container and which runs in a charging tube 7 located at the very bottom of the refuse container. v i
According tothe invention, the charging screw 5 is unsymmetrically located with respect to a vertical plane through the center of the emptying hood 3. More precisely, the charging screw 5 is displaced laterally (to the leftin FIG. 1 and 3-4) with respect to said vertical plane which is parallel to the rotation axis of the charging screw. The lateral displacement is designated with F in FIG. 1. The emptying'hood 3 has a loading opening'9 facing backwards and the lower edge of which comprises a lowered loading ramp 10 which is located on the opposite side of said vertical plane with respect to the charging screw and is shown in dash-dot lines in FIG. 3, since it is located to the right of the line III-III in FIG. 2.
Thanks to said displacement between the hood and the screw it is possible, without any difficulties, to provide an additional opening for the emptying of mechanically hoisted and tilted dustbins in the emptying hood 3 directly above the charging screw 5 and laterally of the loading ramp 10.
In the illustrated embodiment the emptying hood 3 is displaced laterally with respect'to the central, longitudinal plane of the refuse container, preferably by the same amount F as the displacement between the hood 3 and the screw 5.
According to the invention, there is further provided a down-feeder 11, which in FIG. 3 is illustrated in solid lines in its rear position and in dash-dot lines in its fore position and which is driven by a fluid motor 12 of the cylinder and piston type which is located in the lower portion of the emptying hood 3,laterally of the charging screw 5, inside the loading ramp 10. Thanks to this down-feeder the loading opening 9 is always maintained free for continuous loading of refuse, which is an important advantage. The down-feedercan possibly be operated synchronously with the drive shaft of the charging screw, so that loading takes place in the open part of a turn.

l. A refuse container having a bottom wall and comprising an emptying hood, a charging screw which is journalled in said hood on an inclined rotational axis, which is located laterally of a vertical plane substantially parallel to said rotational axis, through the center of the emptying hood, a first loading opening substantially vertically above said screw in said hood for receiving refuse from a mechanically hoisted and tilted dustbin, and a second loading opening in said hood for manual loading of refuse, said second loading opening having a lower edge comprising a lowered loading ramp whichis located on the opposite side of said vertical plane with respect to the charging screw and on a lower level than the bottom wall of the refuse container.
2. Refuse container accordingto claim 1, characterized in that it is mounted on a vehicle.
3. Refuse container according to claim 1,. characterized by the provision of a motor driven down-feeder for refuse which is provided in the hood adjacent to said ramp beside the screw, for feeding emptied refuse towards said screw.
4. Refuse container according to claim 3, characterized by the provision of a fluid motor of the cylinder and piston type for reciprocating said downfeeder.
5. Refuse container according to claim 1, characterized in that the emptying hood is displaced laterally with respect to a longitudinal plane through the .center of the refuse container.
6. Refuse container according to claim 5, characterized in that the longitudinal axis of the charging screw lies substantially in said longitudinal plane through the center of the refuse container.

A refuse container comprising an emptying hood, which is displaced laterally with respect to a longitudinal plane through the center of the refuse container, a charging screw, which is journalled in said hood on an inclined rotational axis, which is located laterally of a vertical plane substantially parallel to said rotational axis, through the center of the emptying hood, a first loading opening located substantially vertically above said screw in said hood for receiving refuse from a mechanically hoisted and tilted dustbin, a second loading opening in said hood for manual loading of refuse, said second loading opening comprising a lowered loading ramp, which is located on the opposite side of 5 said vertical plane withrespect to the charging screw and on a lower level than the inside of the bottom of the refuse container, a down-feeder for refuse, which is fluid motor of the cylinder and piston type for reciprocating said down-feeder.
Claims (7)
1. A refuse container having a bottom wall and comprising an emptying hood, a charging screw which is journalled in said hood on an inclined rotational axis, which is located laterally of a vertical plane substantially parallel to said rotational axis, through the center of the emptying hood, a first loading opening substantially vertically above said screw in said hood for receiving refuse from a mechanically hoisted and tilted dustbin, and a second loading opening in said hood for manual loading of refuse, said second loading opening having a lower edge comprising a lowered loading ramp which is located on the opposite side of said vertical plane with respect to the charging screw and on a lower level than the bottom wall of the refuse container.
2. Refuse container according to claim 1, characterized in that it is mounted on a vehicle.
3. Refuse container according to claim 1, characterized by the provision of a motor driven down-feeder for refuse which is provided in the hood adjacent to said ramp beside the screw, for feeding emptied refuse towards said screw.
4. Refuse container according to claim 3, characterized by the provision of a fluid motor of the cylinder and piston type for reciprocating said downfeeder.
5. Refuse container according to claim 1, characterized in that the emptying hood is displaced laterally with respect to a longitudinal plane through the center of the refuse container.
6. Refuse container according to claim 5, characterized in that the longitudinal axis of the charging screw lies substantially in said longitudinal plane through the center of the refuse container.
7. A refuse container comprising an emptying hood, which is displaced laterally with respect to a longitudinal plane through the center of the refuse container, a charging screw, which is journalled in said hood on an inclined rotational axis, which is located laterally of a vertical plane substantially parallel to said rotational axis, through the center of the emptying hood, a first loading opening located substantially vertically above said screw in said hood for receiving refuse from a mechanically hoisted and tilted dustbin, a second loading opening in said hood for manual loading of refuse, said second loading opening comprIsing a lowered loading ramp, which is located on the opposite side of said vertical plane with respect to the charging screw and on a lower level than the inside of the bottom of the refuse container, a down-feeder for refuse, which is provided in the hood adjacent to said emptying ramp beside the screw and reciprocable substantially perpendicularly to the rotational axis of said charging screw for feeding emptied refuse towards said screw, and a fluid motor of the cylinder and piston type for reciprocating said down-feeder.
