BOOK ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,525, dated September 27, 1887,

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARON BIEBER, of Bieber, in the county of Lassen and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which'- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book, showing the application of my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment detached from the book. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 00 w in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line y y in Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for books which will mark the place temporarily and bind the leaves of the book together against the cover.

My invention consists of a spring acted plate bent to receive the edge of the bookcover and provided with a slide, in which is inserted an elastic band which passes around the cover and around the leaves of the book.

The plate A, which forms the body of the attachment,is of spring material,returned upon itself, forming a groove, B, for receiving the edge of the book. The bend of the plate A is enlarged, as shown at Fig. 3, to allow the plate to spring to adapt itself to covers of different thickness. The longer arm of the plate A eX- tends inward along the inner face of the bookcover, and the shorter arm of the plate extends along the outer surface of the book-cover and is provided with a guide, C, consisting of a rectangular tube slotted in one side and closed at the ends. In the guide 0 is placed a slide,

D, having an eye, a, which projects through the slot of the guide 0, and in which is inserted an endless elastic band, E.

The elastic bandEpasses around the outer side of the cover and around the leaves of the book, as shown in Fig. 1, the elastic band being adjusted upon the margin of the page, or upon some other blank portion of the page. The slide D, being movable in the guide 0, admits of the adjustment of the cord E within the1im-' its of the guide 0.

My improved attachment may be applied to both covers of the book, and will hold the leaves of the open book in contact with the cover, and will prevent them from turning by their own elasticity or by the action of wind. The elastic cord E and the elasticity of the plate A permit of applying the attachment to a book of any size with any thickness of cover.

It is obvious that for a given-sized book the slide D may be fixed or the eye a may be secured in the required position on the plate A, as when the attachment is to be used on books of one size only no adjustment will be needed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a book attachment, the combination of the spring-plate A, folded or returned upon itself, and the elastic cord E, carried by the plate and arranged to receive the cover and leaves of the book, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a book attachment formed of the spring-plate A, folded or returned upon itself, the guide 0, attached to the plate A, the slide D, received in the guide 0 and having the eye a, and the endless elastic band E, received in the eye a, substantially as herein shown and described.
