UMBRELLA HOLDER This invention relates to umbrella holders to be worn as apparel.
An object of this invention is to provide an umbrella holder in which an elongated hollow member receives and holds an umbrella shaft to support the umbrella while leaving the wearers hands free for use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the class described with an umbrella engaging element to releasably secure the umbrella shaft in the elongated hollow member, removably and adjustably secured to the body of the wearer.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device ofthe class described which will be simple and economical in construction, employing a minimum of parts; and, which will be efficient and durable in use.
The invention will be more fully understood from the following specification, read in conjunction with the drawings, forming a part thereof, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a face elevation of the device shown positioned upon a wearer;
FIG. 2 is a face elevation of a modification of the elongated hollow member showing a helical cylindrical member;
FIG. 3 is a face elevation showing a further modification of the elongated hollow member as a rolled member with releasable fastening means for effecting a cylinder;
FIG. 4 is a face elevation of a further modification of the elongated hollow member provided with diametrically opposed elongated hollow guideways to receive the continuous filament;
FIG. 5 is a face elevation of a further modification of the elongated hollow member having diametrically opposed, aligned spaced guide members to receive the continuous filament;
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a removable shaft securing means removably inserted in the elongated hollow member; and,
FIG. 7 is a plan view of the device of FIG. 6.
Referring to the drawings, wherein likemembers are given the same or similar reference numerals, an umbrella 10 is indicated generally, having a shaft 11 inserted in an elongated hollow and substantially rigid member 12, preferably substantially cylindrical, which receives a central portion 13 of a continuous filament.
The central portion 13 of the filament, which may be a rope, strap, or similar flexible member, is formed in a loop extending through the cylindrical member 12 and positioned over one shoulder 14 and under the opposed arm pit 15 of the wearer. The terminal ends of the filament extend around the waist of the wearer and terminate in complimentary fastening means such as the snapbuckle 17 on one terminal end and a loop or eye 19 on the other terminal end. At least one end of the filament is adjustable by a conventional adjusting buckle 18.
The elongated hollow member 12 is preferably a minimal of 8 inches in length and more desirable 10 inches in length. It is also preferred to be of a substantially rigid light weight material such as plastic, polypropylene being very desirable due to its strength and impact resistence. Aluminum is also a satisfactory material.
A modification of the elongated hollow member is shown in FIG. 2 as a helical member 20, which will provide a certain resiliency in employing shafts of different diameters. The terminal ends 21 of the helical member 20 are preferably flared, as are the terminal ends of all modifications of the elongated hollow member.
An illustration of a further modification of the elongated member is shown in FIG. 3, wherein a semi-rigid material, such as heavy leather, is employed, in which a sheet is rolled into a elongated hollow cylindrical member 22, with cooperating releasable fastening members 23 such as snap fasteners, having one member releasably fastening'the second member in a conventional manner. This embodiment is particularly advantageous in use with umbrellas having the shaft 1 l terminating in a hook or handle such as a walking cane type handle.
In FIG. 4 a further modification of the elongated hollow member is illustrated, in which the elongated member 24 is provided with diametrically opposed elongated substantially cylindrical guide members 25 adapted to receive the continuous filament l3.
' A .further modification of the elongated hollow member, is illustrated in FIG. 5, in which the elongated member 26 is provided with diametrically opposed, aligned and spaced hollowguide members .27, usually three to each side, which receives the continuous filament 13.
It is frequently desirable to provide means for holding or releasably securing the umbrella shaft 11 within the elongated hollow member 12, and this can be accomplished in several manners, one of which is to provide a removable deformable elastomer, such as cellular members including sponges, rubber sponges and synthetic sponges. Another way, is to provide a venturi or angular shaped open-end spring, with one end an gularly disposed to'abut the top or terminal end of the elongated member 12; but, a more satisfactory clamping means is illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7, which comprises elongated rods 32 having one end 31 angularly disposed to abutthe terminal end of the cylindrical member 12. The upper end of one set or pair of rods 32 have disposed between them and pivotally secured thereto, a plate 28 terminating in an angular bifurcated leaf spring member 29 defininga channel to partially receive a shaft 11; and, the opposed rods 32 have a similar plate 28 and bifurcated leaf spring member 29 disposed between them and connected therewith. The lower terminal ends of the rods 32 are secured to a plate member 33 having a substantially U-shaped aperture 34 provided therein to receive the umbrella shaft 11, and has a spring loaded detent 35 connected to a pivotal plate secured to the rods 32 and adapted to abut the umbrella shaft 11; and, opposed to the detent 35 is a spring loaded pivotal plate member 36 with an arcuate aperture adapted to abut the shaft 11 of the umbrella. This unit is slidably insertable and removable from the elongated hollow member 12 and any of the modifications thereof illustrated.
The elongated hollow substantially rigid member 12 has been described and illustrated to be cylindrical in form for the reason that such design is readily available on the open market in all of the preferred materials, and for the further reason that most umbrella shaft are cylindrical or circular in cross sections, of course other geometric designs could be employed. The continuous filament 13 can be natural or synthetic can be cylindrical or flat in strap shape or any other geometrical design. Cylindrical filament has been illustrated because of its availability, although flat straps are more desirable and probably equally available.
