2Claims,2DrawingFigures PTEIESDSEP 5 Ian DRUM GRINDER PARTICULARLY FOR GRINDING THE LINING OF BRAKE SHOES BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention This invention relates to a grinder for grinding the lining of brake shoes.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART In hitherto known machines for grinding of brake shoes lining, a motor drives a drum of a cylindrical grinding member by means of a transmission, said motor being vertically mounted outside of a grinder drum, thus the overall dimensions of a grinder considerably increase as the space is necessary for the motor and transmission mounting, and consequently the weight increases too.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of this invention is to provide a grinder without any belt transmission at all and wherein a rotor of a drive motor is not separately journalled. This purpose has been achieved, when a drive motor has been mounted inside the drum of the grinder, said motor mounted on the axle of said drum and the surface of this drum being a grinding member.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING FIG. 1 is an axial sectional view of the preferred embodiment of the present invention; and
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to FIGS. 1 and 2 in detail, on axle 12 of motor 1, drum 2 of a grinder is mounted, said drum 2 being journalled in bearings 3 and 4. The motor 1 is a conventional motor having a rotor and a stator 22 in surrounding relationship with the rotor 20. The rotor 20 includes the rotor shaft or axle 12 which extends axially beyond the stator 22 for connecting the drum 2 thereto for rotation therewith. The upper end of the rotor 20 of motor 1 is journalled together with the grinder drum 2 in bearing 3 and the lower end of the rotor 20 is journalled in bearing 5. Thanks to such construction the clearance reduction of grinder bearings is possible by screwing up nut 6 on axle 12 of motor 1. At the lower end of drum 2 of the grinder, exhauster 7 is mounted which exhausts the dust produced during the grinding operation.
A brake jaw is clamped in a special holder 8 rotatably clamped in slide 9 and when the distance from the drum surface to the clamping device is adjusted, said distance corresponding to the brake drum radius, the entire surface of a lining is ground as holder 8 is drawn to the grinding member 1 1.
To turn the clamping device around the axis, hand lever 10 is used, and to obtain the working feed, holder 8 is shifted together with a jaw clamped in it, by the way of turning of hand lever 10 provided with a scale.
The grinder according to this invention is of a compact and modern construction, its dimensions and weight is about 33 percent smaller than that of hitherto known devices, and it is very easy and convenient in fi i s g be understood that the above described embodiment of the invention is merely illustrative of the principles thereof and that numerous modifications and embodiments of the invention may be derived within the spirit and scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. An apparatus for grinding a brake shoe lining, said apparatus comprising a hollow drum having an outer grinding surface for grinding a brake shoe lining and an inner surface, a motor including a hollow housing having an inner surface and an outer surface, a rotor, a stator in surrounding relation with said rotor and a rotor shaft extending axially beyond said stator at opposite ends thereof for rotation with said rotor about an axis, said rotor and stator being mounted within said motor housing, means for mounting said motor within said hollow drum coaxially therewith with said motor hous ing outer surface spaced from said drum inner surface, means for fixedly connecting said drum to said rotor shaft for rotation therewith, said drum being connnected to said rotor by means of said rotor shaft, said mounting means including first bearing means adjacent one axially extending end of said shaft within said motor housing, said shaft and said drum being journalled together in said first bearing means, said first bearing means having a portion thereof axially spaced from said motor housing inner surface in the direction of said shaft axis of rotation to enable a predetermined amount of play in said first bearing means, and second bearing means at the opposite axially extending end of said shaft, said other end of said shaft being journalled therein, and means threadably mounted on said shaft at said one end for varying the axial spacing between said first bearing means portion and said motor housing inner surface to vary said play.
2. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said drum includes an exhaust means in communication with said outer grinding surface for exhausting particulate produced by said brake shoe lining grinding.
