N. W. PRATT.
OONNEGTING BOX FOR SEGTIONAL STEAM BOILERS. N0. 368,610. Patented Aug. 23, 1887.

NAT. W. PRATT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CONNECTING BOX FOR SEGTIONAL STEANl OILER9.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,610, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed March 3, 1887. Serial No. 229,569. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
v Be it known that I, NAT. W. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
county of Kings, and State of New York, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting-Boxes for Sectional Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of boxes for use in making a connection between a drum and a series of water-tubes of sectional water-tube steam-boilers; and the said invention consists in applying certain novel features of construction to the said boxes for the purpose of producing them from wrought metal. [5 In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe the features of its construction, having reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently point out in the appended claims its novel characteristics.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a part of a drum and box connected in position thereto; Fig. 2, a central vertical section on the line 00, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a partial plan view of the connecting-box detached from the drum, Fig. 4, a cross-section on the line y y, Figs. 1 and 3, viewed in a direction opposite to that of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a central section of a part of the connectingboxand drum taken on the line 22, Figs. 2 and 3.
The present construction consists in pressing from a sheet of wrought metal an open box, A, having a perimeter, a, for the recep tion of a flanged tube-sheet, A, and in pressing upon the top or back of the said open box a saddle depression, 0, made to fit the curvature of the side of a drum, B. The saddle depression andadjacent side of the drum have corresponding perforations b, in which nipples c areinserted for connecting the said parts together and establishing communication.
The saddledepression 0 presents in plan view an approximate oval form, bulging at f, 5 Figs. 1 and 2, which offers an increased flattened surface for the reception of numerous perforations b.
The upper sides, 9, of the box A are preferably inclined or converged at an angle toward the ends for compactness of form.
The tube-sheet A presents at the bottom of the manifold a flat surface, (I, having perforations e for the reception of water-tubes. For the purpose of entering the tubes at an angle other thana right angle to the axis of the drum the said flat surface maybe inclined in either direction to the said axis, or it may be parallel therewith.
In another application filed simultaneously herewith, Serial No. 229,576, the special con struction shown in Fig. 5 of the present application is included in claims 6 and 7 of said other application.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrought-metal connecting-box for water-tube boilers, made of two pieces, a saddleboX and a tube-sheet, riveted or welded together with substantially parallel sides swelled into an approximate oval where it joins the drum, substantially as specified.
2. Awrought-metal connectingbox for wator-tube boilers, having a saddle-box and tubesheet, riveted together with substantially parallel sides swelled into an approximate oval 7 where it joins the drum, and provided with perforations in the saddle-face, through which it may be secured to and made to connect with a drum by nipples fixed in said perforations, substantially as specified.
3. A wrought-metal connection for water tube boilers, having two sides substantially parallel through a great part of their surface, an approximately oval top perforated for tubes and curved to fit a drum, and a perforated 85 bottom, substantially as specified.
NAT. \V. PRATT.
