Be it known that I, W ILLLIM H. HAYDEN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trace-Carriers, of whichthefol lowing is a specification.

My invention relates to a trace-carrier, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of the same, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a trace-carrier which is simple and effective in its construction and operation, strong and durable, readily understood, easily handled, adjustable and convenient, positive in its result, and cheaply manufactured. Iattain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which Figure I is a front elevation of my improved trace-carrier attached to a portion of a back-band. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my improved trace-carrier. Fig. 3 isa trans verse vertical section on the line x vof Fig. l.

The carrier B consists, essentially, of an upper or band-attaching portion, b, and alower hook-supporting loop, b. The portion l; is constructed of rectangular coniiguratiomhaving two side bars, b2, having two central crossbars, b3 b3, integrally formed therewith. The upper position of each of the side bars, b2, merge into or are formed with two shortbars, b4, running at right angles thereto and parallel with the central crossbars, ba. These bars Zrare extended inward for a short space or distance, and are formed with turnedup ends b5 at their inner portions. By this construction an opening is formed between the two ends b5, for a purpose which will be more fully hereinafter set forth. From the lower portions of the side bars, b2, short right-angled arms D6 extend inwardly toward each other. These arms b are also formed integrally with the side bars, b, and have the two arms of' a depending loop, b, formed integral therewith, which is formed in turn with a hook, bl, projecting upwardly some distance above the lower curve of the loop b", and is turned inwardly into the open space between the arms of the lsaid loop. This hook b?, as will be readily understood, is engaged by the link or loop of a trace-chain or tug, and by the inward curve thereof the said trace-chain or tug is securely fastened and a projection of any part thereof prevented.

As shown in Fig. 3, the end of the backband A is passed under .the two short arms bt, then over the upper crossbar, b3, and out between said lower crossebar and the short arms or bars b", and is then brought up over the face ofthe carrier and inserted in the opening between the ends b5, which is accomplished by slightly twisting the end of the band A, and said end of the band is then brought in contact with the main portion of theband, and retained therewith by the short bars or arms b4. By this manner of attaching the carrier to the .band a permanent securementis obtained,and

which is adjustable by releasing the end of the band from engagement with the arms b4, and drawing the carrier B upwardly or downwardly, as may be desired, ou the band A.

The parts ofthe carrier are constructed integral and at one operation, and the novelty, utility,and adaptability are obvious,and need notbe enlarged upon herein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, Patent, is

l. As an improved article of manufacture, the trace-carrier herein described, consisting of an upper or band-attaching portion having a series of straight cross-bars and a series of upper short bars with turned-up ends,with an opening between said opposing ends, and a lower depending-hook portion, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a trace-carrier having a series of upper short bars -having an opening between their opposing ends, the series of straight cross-bars b3 and the backband, substantially as described.

3. The trace-carrier herein described, having the side bars, b2, and the series of straight cross-bars b, devoid of any teeth or tongues, combined with the back-band doubled upon itand desire to secure by Lettersk ICC WlLLIAM H. HAYDEN, JR.
