CARTRIDGE-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,578, dated August 23, 1887.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. FRAZIER, of the city and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Cartridge- 1Foxes, of which the following is a specifica- The principal object of this improvement is to provide a cartridge-box with a cover-flap which is capable of being rapidly adjusted to shield the contents of the cartridge-box from rain, and also of being rapidly removed from the position in which it covers the cartridgebox to a position in which it is entirely out of the way and offers no obstruction to the extrication of cartridges from the box.

To this end the invention consists, first, in the combination, with the cartridge-box, of a sliding cover-flap sufficiently long to cover the rear side of the box, the top, and the whole or a suitable portion of the front of the box, and sufficiently wide to extend beyond the ends of the box, and thereby act as ashield to protect the contents of the box from rain. There is attached to the back of the box, by riveting or otherwise, a suitable frame,which may be made of metal, and which extends beyond the ends of the box a sufficient distance to enable it to contain the sliding cover-flap, the ends of the frame serving as the vertical guides for aligning the path of movement of the coverflap. The belt, by means of which the cartridge-box is secured to the person of the user, may be either fastened to this frame or the frame may be provided with openings at its ends through which the belt may be inserted. The frame is wide enough to allow space for the insertion of the belt, and is offset from the back of the box to afford clearance for the sliding cover-flap and also to hold the box away from the body of the user, and thus leave a space for ventilation in the rear of the box.

A further feature of the invention, therefore, consists of a frame which is suitably applied to the back of the cartridge-box, and thus serves to hold the box away from the body of the user, and thereby leaves a space for ventilation in the rear of the box; and, finally, the invention embraces the combination of the box and its sliding cover-flap with a frame suitably applied to and projecting rearwardly' from the back of the cartridge box, which frame is adapted to afford the vertical guides for the sliding cover-flap, and is also adapted to be attached to or suspended upon the cartridge belt.

The accompanying drawings of a cartridge box containing the improvements are as follows: Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top View showing the cover-flap in the position which it occupies when pulled downward to uncover the cartridge-box. Fig. 8- is a vertical section through the line a; a; on Fig. 1, showing the coverfiap in the same position as that in which it is represented in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the same plane as Fig. 8, but showing the coverflap in the position which it occupies when it covers the cartridge-box and is fastened to the button-knob on the under side of the cartridge-box. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a portion of a cartridgebox provided upon its rear side with a frame made of sheet metal. Fig. 6 is a view of a sheet-metal blank from which the frame may be formed. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a frame cast in one piece, se-" cured to the back of the box by means of pipeseams inclosing portions of the frame.

The drawings represent a leather cartridgebox, A, of the shape and size required to euable it to contain a prescribed number of cartridgesas, for example, two rows of ten eachas shown. The back a is preferably so elongated as to project beyond the opposite ends of the box and to thus form the extensions a a.

Attached to the back of the box is a frame, 13, which may be cast or otherwise formed in one piece, or, if desired, may be made of sheet metal cut out in the shape of the blank G.

The required form is given to the blank C by bending up the side flanges D E along the lines D D and E E respectively, and then bending over the tongues (Z d cl 0 0 c and overlapping and riveting together, respectively, the side tongues d and e, d and e, and d and e. The end tongues, F and G, are then doubled under by bending them, respectively, to a right angle, first along the lines F F and G G2 and then along the lines F F and G G", the doubled-under portions of the tongues F and G being for application to the back of the leather cartridge-box, to which they are secured by a suitable number of rivets or in any other convenient manner.

Openings H H, &c., are provided in the inner portion of the frame to allow convenient access to the bent-under tongues F and G, for the purpose of applying the rivets h h h, &c., by which they are respectively secured to the end extensions a a of the back of the box. Other openings, I,may be provided for the purpose of lightening the frame. The bights -of the bent-under tongues F and G serve as that the latter may be so far offset from the flap that, it will catch uponthje upper edge of the box when the cover-flap is pulled down, and thus serve as a check for limiting the downward movement of the cover-flap.

, Near the lowered'geof the cover-flap, either on the inner or outer surface thereof, there is fastened thehorizontal check-bar K which, wheiithe cover-flap is pulled up, is brought into collision with the under edge of the box or with the under edge of the frame, as the case may be, and thereby limits the upward motion of the cover-flap. A similar checkbar may be affixed near the upper edge of the coverflap, if for any reason itis' desired not I to employ the tag 70 for checking the downward movement of the cover-flap.

The tag 79 is provided with the buttonhole k, by means of which, when the cover-flap has been pulled up and carried acrossthe top and down the front of the cartridge-box, the coverflapis attached to the button-knob L, affixed to and projecting downward from the under side of the box'. a If it is not desired to have the cartridge-box detachable from the belt, the belt may be fastened to the frame in any convenient way.

It will be seen that the rear side of the frame B is concave, and is thus adapted to approximately fit against the body of the user of the cartridge-box.

, Instead of using sheet metal to form the frame forthe back of the cartridge-box, the frame may be cast in one piece, and may be 'securedto the back of the cartridge-box, as shown in Fig. 7, by means of the horizontal pipes'eam m, inclosing a longitudinal bar, m, of the cast frame M, and by the vertical pipeseams N and N, inclosing, respectively, the

vertical bars a and n, at the ends of the cast frame M.

What is claimed as the invention 1s- 1. A cartridge-box for holding a prescribed number of cartridges, in combination with a vertically sliding cover flap and vertical guides affixed to the back of the box for the purpose of guiding the movements of the sliding cover-flap.

2. The combination of a sliding cover-flap with a cartridge-box provided upon its back with a frame suitably offset to afford clearance forthe vertically-sliding cover-flap.

3. The combination, as herein set forth, of a cartridge-box provided at its back with a frame secured at its opposite ends to thevertical edges of the back of the box, the portion of the said frame between its ends being su1tably offset from theback of the boxto afford clearance for acover-flap, which is adapted to slide vertically between the back of the box and the offset portion of the frame.

4:- The combination, as herein set forth, of a cartridge-box having affixed to its back a frame, substantially such as described, with a sliding cover-flap adapted to slide between the back of the box and the offset portion of the frame. and provided with 'a horizontal checkbar, K", for the purpose of limiting the range of upward movement of the said cover-flap.

5. The combination of a cartridge-box provided with a frame, substantially such as herein described, with a sliding cover-flap adapted to slide vertically between the back of the box and the offset portion of said frame, and a tag,

or check-bar afiixed to the middle of the upperedge of the cover-flap for the purpose of limiting the range of downward movement of the cover-flap. I

6. The sliding cover-flap D, provided at or near its lower edge with the horizontal checkb'ar K and upon its upper edge with the perforated tag it, in combination with a cartridgeboxand a button-knob affixed thereto for engaging the button-hole 7c in the tag it, and fastening the cover in place after it has been arranged in position to shield the contents of the cartridge-box.

7. A cartridge-box for holding a prescribed number of cartridges, in combination with a vertically-sliding cover-flap,the width of which is greater than the length of thebox, and means for guiding the cover-flapin its movements, substantially as set forth. v

8. A cartridge-box for holding a prescribed number of cartridges, in combination with a frame projecting rearwardly from the back of the box for the purpose of holding the box away from the body of the user and thus leaving a space for ventilation in the rear of the box. 7 v

9. A cartridge-box for holding a prescribed number of cartridges, in combination with a frame projecting rearwardly from the back of the box, and a cartridgedoeltto or upon which the said frame is attached or suspended.

10. A cartridge-box forholdingaprescribed A ,/l V

number of cartridges, in combination with a IO vertically-sliding cover-flap and means for limiting the range of movement of the said cover-flap.
