UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN WV. HARTMANN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
JEWELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,976, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed May 2?, 1887.
Serial No. 239,018. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN W. HART- MANN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide new and improved jewelry provided with a Concealed receptacle for perfumery or scents, whereby the article of jewelry is perfumed and at all times emits a pleasant odor.
The invention consists in an article of jewelry provided with a receptacle or pocket for receiving and holding a piece of any suitable material saturated with perfumery of any desired kind.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter. and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face view of my improved jewelry. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 00 :12, Fig. 3, of part of the same on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a rear View of the part shown in Fig. 2, the cap being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A represents a rose made of sheet gold, silver, 810.; B, the stem, and O the leaves on the stem.
The rose may be colored or enameled and finished in any well-known manner. The outer leaves, a, of the rose are fixed around a perforated plate, D, from which the central stem, B, projects, to which the central leaves, F, of the rose are secured. On the under side or back of the perforated plate D the casing G is formed, which may have any desired shape, but is preferably made circular, and said casing can be closed by the cap or cover H, which contains a small piece, J, of sponge or other fibrous or porous material which is saturated with a perfume. Said perfumed piece is thus held in the casing on the back of the rose, and the odor or scent from said perfumed piece can escape through the apertures in the plate D.
In place of the rose any other flower may be imitated. The perfumery used preferably corresponds to the scent of the flower represented. For instance, for a rose ottar of roses is placed into the casing. As the flowers of the jewelry are rendered fragrant, it will appear as if the flowers were natural.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with an article ofjewelry, of a casing on the back of the same, part of which casing is perforated, and of a cap for closing the casing, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. An article of jewelry made in imitation of flowers, and provided with a perforated plate in front of which the central leaves of the flower are held, a casing on the back of said perforated plate, and a cap or cover for closing said casing, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHE. V. HARTMANN.
