Abstract

Foamed plastic sheets interlock to form a continuous slab which is laid on the road bed or the like prior to pouring concrete to seal the concrete from the road bed. Chairs or the like are formed on the upper surface of the sheets to support reinforcing mesh at the required height above the sheets.

FIG. 3 INVENTOR ALFRED V. SCHWARZ ATTORNEY PLASTIC SHEETS FOR CONCRETE REINFORCING MESH This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for supporting reinforcing mesh for concrete or the like and at the same time providing an insulating sheet between the concrete and the till material upon which the concrete is being poured.
The advantage of this seal or insulating sheet is that it not only insulates the concrete from heat or cold but also prevents hydraulic pressure from bearing directly upon the poured concrete.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which provides means for installing integrally with the sheet, chairs to support the steel reinforcing mesh the predetermined height from the surface upon which the concrete is being poured.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which can be used equally as well for pouring ceilings, the surface forming the ceiling being formed from a plastic sheet which is easily finished.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithln described which consists of a plurality of plastic foam sheets interlocking with one another to form a sealed surface and having chairs formed on one surface thereof to support reinforcing steel mesh for concrete.
With the foregoing in view, and such other or huther purposes, advantages or novel features as may become apparent from consideration of this disclosure and specification, the present invention consists of, and is hereby claimed to reside in, the inventive concept which is comprised, embodied, embraced, or included in the method, procea, construction, composition, arrangement or combination of parts, or new use of any of the foregoing, of which concept, one or more specific embodiments of same are herein exemplified as illustrative only of such concept, reference being had to the accompanying figures in which:
FIG. I is an isometric view of one of the sheets.
FIG. 2 is an end view of FIG. 1 showing the reinforcing steel in place.
FIG. 3 is a plan view psrtly schematic showing a plurality of sheets with reinforcing mesh supported thereon.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing one form of joint between adjacent sheets.
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4 but showing a modification thereof.
FIG. 6 is an enlarged view, partly in section and partly in elevation, showing one of the chairs.
in the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
Proceeding therefore to describe the invention in detail,
reference character It) illustrates a sheet of polyurethane foamorthelikeandalthoughsieelsnotofimportance. nevertheless it h considered convenient to manufacture these sheets in Zfeet X 4 feet dimensions.
Meat! are provided around the perlmetrical edges of the sheet [0 to enable adjacent sheets to interlock and form a seal. FIG. 4 shows one such means in which two edges ofthe sheet are formed with an extending centrally located shoulder 11 andtheothertwoedgesareformedwithamatingrecesaor groove 12 so that when the edges are engaged together, the shoulder 11 fits within the me. 12 thus holding the sheets in a sealed position.
FIG. 5 shows a conventional ship-lap joint illustrated by reference character 13.
Normally the polyurethane foam or similar material does not need surfacing but, if desired, one surface may be provided with a plastic sheet 14 during manufacture as shown in FIG. 5 or, alternatively, both surfaces may be formed from a plutic sheet with the foam 1! therebetween. This is also shown in FIG. 5.
Formed on the upper surface 16 of the sheets is a plurality of plastic chairs [7 adapted to receive conventional concrete reinforcing steel or mesh 18 and to support same at a ned height above the upper surface 16. This is FIGS. 2 and 3 so that when concrete is poured, the
predetermi shown in mesh is automatically positioned to provide the optimum strength and does not require the usual pulling up through the concrete. Slots 17' are provided in the chairs having enlarged lower ends 17A. The slots are at right angles to one another and allow the reinforcing steel snaps into position and is held firmly.
When a floor or ceiling is poured with a completely sealed sheet 10, it acts as an insulator and also acts to prevent or release hydraulic pressure upon the poured floor.
Various modifications can be made within the scope of the inventive concept which is herein disclosed and/or claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
I. An insulating base and reinforcing rod support for concrete floors and pavemenu, comprising in combination a horizontally disposed sheet of foamed synthetic plastic material adapted to be positioned on a surface on which concrete is to be poured and to remain in situ after pouring, and a plurality of upwardly projecting knob-like chairs formed integrally with said sheet and disposed on the upper surface of the sheet in a pattern of spaced parallel intersecting rows, each of said chairs being formed with a CWIIGPGd slot coincident with the intersection of said rows, said slot being open at the top and sides of the chair and the bottom of the cross-shaped slot in each chair is enlarged for a snap reception and support of reinforcing rods at right angles to each other.
