To au whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that we, JAMES WV. KENT and ARCHIBALD KENT, both of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Paint- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of apparatuses which are used for expelling paint from paint-cans in any desired quantities or proportions through an orifice at or near the bottom or lower end of the cans; and its object is toprovide an ,apparatus of the class specified which will be strong, simple-in construction, capable of rapid and convenient operation, and in which the piston'or plunger will remain elevated to any requisite height when the apparatus is not in active use or operation.
VThe invention comprises certain novel combinations of parts whereby said objects are effectually secured.
Figure l is a front view, and Fig. 2 is a side view and partial vertical transverse sectional view, illustrating our said invention.
A is4 the plunger or piston, which, in the operation of the apparatus, is designed to pass into the open top or upper end of the can in the usual manner, and B is the piston-rod, to the lower end of which lis attached the said piston or plunger A. The said piston-rod B is provided with shoulders or offsets a b, one at or near its/top and the other at or near its lower end, and to and between these offsets a b is secured the worm or screw C, lwhich is fast or fixed in its relation with the rod B. The worm or screw C passes through a nut, c, formed at the center of a beveled wheel, D, the hub d of which works in a suitable bearing in a fixed seat, e, which latter forms part of" the frame E of the apparatus.
At the upperpart of theframe E is a guide, g, in which works the upper part of the piston-rod B, the latter being preferably flat in form and rectangular in cross-section. To theV lower Ipartofthe frame E is affixed the shelf F, to receive the can the contents of which are to be operated upon, and to hold the said can in due relation with the piston or plunger A.
The frame Eis provided with a suitable bearlieu thereof, with a crank or other suitable del vice for actuating the said shaft I.
In the operation of the apparatus the shaft I is turned by means as aforesaid to rotate the beveled pinion K and beveled wheel D, thereby causing the nut c to act upon the worm or screw C to give a longitudinal movement thereto. By turning the shaft I in one direotion the worm or screw C, and consequently the piston-rod B and piston or plunger A, are brought away from the shelf F to an extent sufficient to permit the can to be placed upon the latter, which done the movement of the shaft/ I is reversed, and the piston A, being moved inward, passes within the can and presses upon the contents thereof to eject said contents through a suitable outlet at or near the bottom of the can.
It is obvious that although the apparatus can be conveniently used in the position rep resented in the drawings its structure and operation are substantially the same if placed horizontally for operation, or even if inclined or inverted.
That we claim as our invention isl. In a paint-press, the combination of the following elements, to wit: a piston, A, piston-rod 15,worm or screw C, a frame, E, constructed with a seat, e, and guide g, a beveled wheel, D, constructed with an external nut, c, a shaft, I, and beveled pinion K, all substantially as an/d for the purpose herein set forth. In a paintpress, the combination of the following elements, to wit: a piston, A, apiston-rod, B, constructed with shoulders or offsets a b, worm or screw C, secured between the said shoulders or offsets, a frame, E, constructed with a seat, c, and guide g, a beveled wheel, D, provided with hub d, shaft I, and beveled pinion K, all substantially as and for thepurpose herein set forth.
3. In a paint-press, the combination of the following elements, to wit: a piston, A, piston-rod B, worm or screw C, a frame, E, constructed with a seat, e, guide g, and shelf F, a beveled wheel, D, constructed with an external nut, c, a shaft, I, and beveled pinion K,
