SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 367.557, dated August 2, 1887.
Application filed April 29,1886. Serial No. 200,574.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. SHORT and EUsEBE LALIME, of Malone, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have in vented a new and Improved Balanced Valve for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved cylindrical balance-valve for stcan1-engines,whieh is simple in construction and is completely balanced when the engine is reversed.
The invention consists of a cage placed in the steam-chest and having a vertical motion, and of a cylindrical slide-valve operating in the cage.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. 4
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. 2 is a vertical crossseetion of the cage and slide-valve en the line or 0, Fig. 1. bolt. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the valve=rod, and Figs. 5 and 6 are side elevations of the valve packing-rings.
The steamchest "A is provided with the usual valve-scat, B, and the steamports 0, O, and C". On the valveseat is placed the cage D, which has a slight vertical motion between the seat B and the steam-chest cover E, being guided between the lugs or projections F on the sides of the steam-chest A. The cage D is provided with a central opening, G, in which slides the valve H, and is provided with the ports I, I, and I, which fit over the corre sponding ports 0, G, and O in the valveseat B. The cylindrical slide-valve H consists of the body H, to which are secured the heads H by means of the bolt H, which is connected to the valvebody H and is provided on one Fig. 3 is a plan view of the valve (No model.)
end with a recessed offset, H, into which fits the T end J of the valve-rod J. Each end of the valve H is provided with three out pacifing-rings, K, placed one above the other, as shown in Fig. 1, and held in place by a pin K, passing into the valve-body H.
It will be seen that the pressure of the steam on the valve H is equalized on both ends, as the steam in the steanrehest A can pass be tween the upper side of the cage D and the steam-chest cover E. If the engine is reversed, the back-messure of the steam from either of the ports 0, O, or C will lift the cage D off of the seat B, and thereby relieve the cage D and its slide-valve H from pressure. slides in this short upward movement between the lugs F, the interlocking ends H" and J "of the valve-bolt and the valve-rod permitting such moveinent.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- 1. The cylindrical slide-valve H, consisting of the body portion H, the heads H, the bolt H, having the offset H for the reception of the valve-rod,and the packing-rings K, placed one above the other at each end of the valve, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a balance-valve for steam-engines, a steam-chest having inlet and outlet ports and lugs or projections on its sides, and a valverod having a T-end, in combination with a cage having inlet and outlet ports and being adapted to slide vertically between the lugs on the sides of the steam-chest, a cylindrical valve having three paekingrings placed one above the other at each end and operating in the cage, and the valve-bolt having a recessed projection in which fits the T-end of the valve rod, substantially as shown and described.
