SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 367,477, dated August 2, 1887.
Application filed March 3, 1887. Serial No. 229,593. (No model.)
.To all whom z'f may concern:
Beit known that l, IRA SYLvEs'rEn VANET- TEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and Stat-e of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in swings, and pertains to the class in which a central port-ion having oppositelyextending arms rocks or oscillates upon vthe ground or on a fixed support; and its object is to provide such a device of simple construction, strong and durable, and which may be used either at home for the amusement of children or made of large size and used in public, as at fairs and races.
The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective View of the improved swing upon its supportingbars, and Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the same. l
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the rockers, preferably four in number for a double swing and two for asingle swing, which rockers are made in the form of similar segments of equal circles, are arranged parallel to each other, and have their straight edges connected by the platform D, running transversely to the swing. The rockers are connected and braced together by the transverse bars c a, which have their ends secured in the rockers at the side of the swing, and pass through and are secured in openings in the central vertical lines of the intermediate rockers, and the similar bars, b b, similarly secured to the rockers, near the ends of the same. The bars a have their edges longitudinal and the bars?) have their edges vertical, or each have their edges in the direction in which the principal strain comes upon them.
C C are the end portions or wings of the swing, which wings being of identical construction a description of one only is necessary. The construction of the win g C is as fol` lows:
c c are parallel inclined bars, the lower parts of which pass between the edges of theplatform B and ofthe bar b on the corresponding side of to which this description more particularly pertains, there will be four inclined bars in each wing. rlhe upper and outer ends of the bars c are connected by the frame D, which rises therefrom and is composed of the vertical rails d, secured to the bars c, the upper horizontal rail, d', and the boarding d.
E E are vertical posts secured near their lower ends tothe outside bars c ofeach wing,
and'with the said ends resting on the upper edges of the outside rockers, near the ends of the same, and c c are wires secured at their ends to the upper corners of the frames D and resting intermediately in not-ches in the upper ends ofthe posts.
E is the awning, secured near its ends to the upper edges of the frames D, extending across the swing and hanging down at the sides thereof over the wires e, so as to protect the persons in the swing from the sun and rain. e' e are transverse wires running between the wires e e, to aid in supporting the awning, and et e2 are brace-wires arranged to support the posts E from the bars c and frames D. Between the inner two bars c of the wing are the steps F, parallel to the platform B,'having their ends inserted into suitable recesses in the adjacent sides of the bars c, and arranged preferably at equal distances from each other. Between each inner barcand the similar outside bar on the same side of the swing are the equidistant platforms Gr, parallel to the platform B, and with their ends inserted into suitable recesses in the sides of the bars c. Rising from the edges of the said bars, on each side of a platform G, are the similar standards, h h, upon whichrare pivoted the sides of the swingingchairs H H, of ordinary construc- IGO tion, and provided with a back, seat, and sides, as shown. 71.' h are footrests secured to and standing inclined from the upper edges of the bars c, immediately below the platform G.
I I arc supporting-bars pivoted at their upper ends to the outside bars c of each wing, near the 'upper ends of said bars, and long enough for their lower ends to rest on the ground when turned down. Vhen the supporting-bars are turned up, the said ends Aare supported by the hooks t, secured to the bars c at suitable points.
J J are brace and supporting bars secured diagonally to the lower edges of the bars c of each wing.
The method of using the swing is as follows: The supportingbars being turned down so the swing cannot oscillate, the riders step onto the platform B, and by means of the steps F reach the chair assigned to their use, each of which seats two persons. The supportingbars are then turned u p, their ends placed in the hooks i, and a man stationed at end by alternately pushing up and pulling down the adjacent wings sets and keeps the swing in motion. The single swing, which is principally for use in families, is smaller than the double swing, and has but two rockers and two bars c, the step F being on the outside of one of the said bars. The swinging seats keep the bodies of the riders vertical, however much the swing may incline, and thus prevents them from falling and being made sick by the ma tion. The platforms G, besides connecting and bracing the bars c, prevent the riders from falling from the swing should the pivots ofthe chairs break.
I-Iaving described my invention, I claim- In an oscillating swing, the combination, with the rockers and platformconnecting the upper edges of said rockers, of the wings cach composed of the four bars c, secured at their lower ends to the rockers and rising therefrom on each side at equal angles, the steps parallel with the said platform, and having their ends inserted in recesses in the sides of the twoinner bars c, the platforms G, parallel with the plat-form connecting the rockers, and having their ends inserted in recesses in the sides of the two bars c on each side of the central longitudinal line of the swing, the uprights rising from the said bars oireach side of the platforms G, the foot-rests secured below said platforms, and the swinging chairs pivoted in said uprights above the platforms G, substantially as specified. t
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRA SYLVESTER VANETTEN.
