A shaver for hair which includes a hair setup part positioned adjacent the cutter of the shaver. The setup part includes a plurality of uniformly spaced diagonally extending grooves positioned in front of the cutter of the shaver which contact the skin of the shaver user and cause the hair thereon to be lifted up in the path of shaver movement with a resulting closer and smoother shave.

Hall [57] ABSTRACT A shaver for hair which includes a hair setup part positioned adjacent the cutter of the shaver. The setup part includes a plurality of uniformly spaced diagonally extending grooves positioned in front of the cutter of the shaver which contact the skin of the shaver user and cause the hair thereon to be lifted up in the path of shaver movement with a resulting closer and smoother shave.

The shaver of this invention will include a power driven hair cutter, a hair setup part, and means supporting the hair setup part adjacently forwardly of the cutter in the path of cutting movement of the shaver. The setup part includes an outer skin-contacting surface which is interrupted by a plurality of spaced grooves. The grooves in the setup part extend obliquely to the path of cutting movement of the shaver. This invention relates to an improvement to my shaver described in US. Pat. No. 2,725,625 and provides for a smoother, more comfortable shave. The diagonally grooved hair setup part incorporated into the shaver of my invention causes the skin on the face or leg of the shaver user to be pulled laterally relative to the direction of cutting movement of the shaver and the hair thereon to be lifted up and positioned for engagement with the cutter. The prior art shavers with hair setup devices, such as those found in US. Pat. Nos. 2,343,705; 2,670,534; and 3,148,447 and of which I am aware, do not provide for such lateral movement of the skin and the uplifting of the hair in preparation for cutting.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a shaver for hair having means incorporated therein which causes the hair to be lifted up in preparation for cutting.
Another object of this invention is to provide an electric shaver for the face or legs which provides a close, comfortable and smooth shave.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a shaver for hair incorporating a hair setup part which does not irritate the skin of the shaver user.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent upon a reading of the invention s description.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A preferred embodiment of this invention has been chosen for purposes of illustration and description wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a shaver which includes my hair setup part.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged cross sectional view of the shaver taken along line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the hair setup part utilized in the shaver of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The preferred embodiment illustrated is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise form disclosed. It is chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the invention and its application and practical use to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the invention.
The shaver illustrated in FIG. 1 includes a housing 12 having a head portion 14. Head portion 14 of shaver 10 carries two laterally spaced parallel cutters 16 each cutter having two parallel cutting sides. Each cutter 16 includes a reticulated screen part 18 which is secured to head portion 14 and a blade part 20 which is positioned within screen part 18 and which is adapted for oscillatory movement relative to the screen part. Each blade part 20 of cutter I6 is connected by an actuating pin 22 to a suitable drive means, such an an electric motor setup part 24 is positioned in approximately the same plane as outer surfaces 30 of cutter parts 18 and is interrupted by a plurality of grooves 28. Grooves 28 extend obliquely between cutters l6 and are preferably spaced an equal distance apart. Grooves 28 are of uniform shape and dimension with each groove having a width preferably between one forty-eighth and one-sixteenth of an inch and a depth of at least one sixtyfourth inch to permit portions of the skin of the shaver user to enter the grooves during use of the shaver. The spacing between grooves 28 is preferably between one-eighth and three-sixteenths inch with the angle of the grooves being preferably between 30 and 60 relative to the length of the setup part. Set up part 24 may be formed of rubber, plastic or metal with grooves 28 therein having a square, arcuate or V- shaped cross-sectional configuration. The upper edges 32 of each groove 28 are preferably slightly rounded to avoid sharp edges in the outer surface 27 of the setup part which, if present, could cause irritation of the skin of the shaver user. Setup part 24 is supported between cutters 16 by partition part 34 of shaver head portion 14. Setup part 24 may be retained upon shaver partition part 34 by being press fitted between cutters 16 or by the use of an adhesive or similar type of bonding agent which secures the setup part to the partition part.
As shaver 10 is moved back and forth in the direction of double-headed arrow 36 in FIG. I, outer surface 27 of setup part 24 makes contact with the skin of the user of the shaver and causes the skin to protrude into the grooves and to be pulled generally laterally relative to the path of movement of the shaver, thus causing the hairs on the skin to be lifted up.
Setup part 24 can be applied to shavers of various constructions, such as shavers having a single cutter-in which case the setup part would be positioned in front of the cutter, or such as shavers having three or more parallel rows of cutters-in which case a setup part 24 would be located between adjacent rows of cutters. In a shaver which includes a single elongated cutter having two longitudinal cutting sides, a setup part 24 could be located on each such side of the cutter so that one of the setup parts would always be in the path of cutting movement of the shaver as it is moved up and down or back and forth across the face, leg or other parts of the body of the shaver user.
It is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the details above given but may be modified within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
I. In a shaver for hair, a power-driven hair cutter having a cutting side, a hair setup means, means supporting said setup means adjacent said cutter in front of said cutting side, said setup means having an outer skin-contacting surface, said outer surface being interrupted by a plurality of parallel grooves, said grooves extending obliquely to said cutting side.
2. The shaver of claim I wherein said cutter has an outer skin-contacting surface, at least a part of the outer surface of said setup means extending to the plane of the outer surface of said cutter.
3. In a shaver for hair, two laterally spaced cutters, a hair setup part, means supporting said setup part between said cutters, said setup part having an outer skin-contacting surface, said skin-contacting surface being interrupted by a plurality of grooves extending obliquely between said cutters whereby skin coming into contact with said setup part during cutting movement of said shaver will be received within said grooves and urged generally laterally of the direction of said cutting movement.
4. The shaver of claim 3 wherein said cutters are substantially parallel and of substantially the same length, said setup part having substantially the same length as said cutters, the grooves in said setup part each extending at an angle between 30 and 60 to said cutters.
5. The shaver of claim 4 wherein said grooves are equally spaced apart.
6. The shaver of claim wherein said grooves each have a depth of at least one sixty-fourth inch and a width of between one-eighth and three-sixteenths inch.
7. The shaver of claim 5 wherein said grooves are spaced between one-eighth and three-sixteenths inch apart. 5
8.-The shaver of claim 4 wherein said setup part extends from one of said cutters to the other of said cutters.

Claims (8)

1. In a shaver for hair, a power-driven hair cutter having a cutting side, a hair setup means, means supporting said setup means adjacent said cutter in front of said cutting side, said setup means having an outer skin-contacting surface, said outer surface being interrupted by a plurality of parallel grooves, said grooves extending obliquely to said cutting side.
2. The shaver of claim 1 wherein said cutter has an outer skin-contacting surface, at least a part of the outer surface of said setup means extending to the plane of the outer surface of said cutter.
3. In a shaver for hair, two laterally spaced cutters, a hair setup part, means supporting said setup part between said cutters, said setup Part having an outer skin-contacting surface, said skin-contacting surface being interrupted by a plurality of grooves extending obliquely between said cutters whereby skin coming into contact with said setup part during cutting movement of said shaver will be received within said grooves and urged generally laterally of the direction of said cutting movement.
4. The shaver of claim 3 wherein said cutters are substantially parallel and of substantially the same length, said setup part having substantially the same length as said cutters, the grooves in said setup part each extending at an angle between 30* and 60* to said cutters.
5. The shaver of claim 4 wherein said grooves are equally spaced apart.
6. The shaver of claim 5 wherein said grooves each have a depth of at least one sixty-fourth inch and a width of between one-eighth and three-sixteenths inch.
7. The shaver of claim 5 wherein said grooves are spaced between one-eighth and three-sixteenths inch apart.
8. The shaver of claim 4 wherein said setup part extends from one of said cutters to the other of said cutters.
