To aZZwhom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANK F. LANDIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesborough, in the-county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traction-Wheels, of which the following isa specitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tractionwheels for traction-engines and other machines; and theobjects of my improvement are to provide traction-wheels with cleats of peculiar nature and shape in cross-section, and to protect against wear and displacement the fastening uniting them to the tire of said wheels. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- .7
Figure 1 represents, in side view and partly in section, a portion of a wheel-tire providedwith cleats formed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are top views of a portion of a wheeltire provided with cleats formed in accordance with my invention, but showing modified arrangements. Fig.5 is a top view of one of the cleats upon a larger scale. Fig. 6 is a transverse verlical section on line 00 m of Fig. 5, but upon a still larger scale.
After many experiments I have found that to produce ordinary flat cleats having sufficient strength their face should not be less than two inches wide, on account of .the reduced section at the points where the rivets pass through the cleat, and that when made wide enough to have the proper strength they present too much of flat surface, that prevents them being pressed sufficiently into the ground to prevent slipping of the wheel, particularly when the edges of the cleats are partly worn away; andin that case, also, the end of the rivets becomes exposed and isliable to be forced inwardby coining in contact with stones. Onehalf of the weight of the traction-engine often bearing upon the end of a rivet,it drives the latter into the cleat, forces its head away from the inside of the tire, and loosens the cleat,
and when once loose and rattling the cleat soon drops off and is generally lost. My object is to obviate these defects by the cleats of wrought or malleable iron, or of steel, made plain or hardened, as hereinafter described in connection with the drawings.
The cleats A are constructed with a flat base, a, slightly inwardlybeveled sides of, a top having flat surfaces a adjacent to the corners, and a central groove, a, extending the whole length of the cleat. This groove I prefer to have made in a continuous curve or concavity, extending from the surfaces a so as to guard against entering angles, that produce weak points from which longitudinal fractures are liable to start in the metal. As the bearing surfaces or flanges a are comparatively small to carry traction-engines and other heavy machines, that part a of the metal is tempered or hardened by means well known to ironworkers', while the lower half, or more, is kept soft or ductile, and in the central groove, a, are bored or formed at suitable intervals openings a to receive rivets b, by which the cleats are secured tothe tire B of the vehicle.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim-- 1. In combination with a traction-wheel tire, flangeless cleats having a fiat base and providedwvith a longitudinal groove extending the whole length thereof, and rivet-holes in said groove, and rivets passing through the bottom of said groove and through the tire, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, traction'wheel cleats having a. flat base and provided with a longitudinal groove extending the whole length thereof, and rivet-holes in said groove, and'liaving thewearing-faces on the sides of said groove hardened, substantially as and for the purpose described.
