ENGINE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,283, dated July 26, 188'7.

- ments in Engine-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide novel means for controlling the cut-off ofV the working-fluid from the cylinder of an engine and to vary the point of cut-off. l This object I accomplish in the manner and by the combinaton of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a steam-chest containing my improved valve. Fig. 2 is a similar section, on a smaller scale than the preceding figure, of a modied form. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of an air-compressorplant-,showing theinvention as applied.

In the drawings, referring to Fig;l, the letter A designates the cylinder of a steam-en' gine of theusual construction, c a being steamports, and b the exhaust-port. Within the steam-chest B, and on a suitable seat, is arranged a main or slide valve, C, provided with two induction-ports, c c', which extend in a nearly vertical direction through the same. A seat is formed on the upper surface of said valve for two secondary or cut-off valves, D D, all as usual in this type of engine. The main valve C can be reciproeated by the connection of its valve-stem with au eccentric on the engine-shaft, or by any other well-known means.` The cut-off valves lD D are guided in their motion by a guide-rod, E, which is rigidly secured at each end in the heads of the steamchest B.
It will be observed that as 4the main vvalve C reciprocate/s on its seat the position of the cut-off valves DD will determine the point at which steam is cut off from the cylinder, and therefore by changing their position the point of cut-off77 is correspondingly varied.
To effect a change in theposition of said cutoff valves as the speed of the engine varies, due to the fluctuations in the load, I connect the same with the stem f of a regulator or gov-V ernor, F, which latter, as in Fig. 1', is actuated from a moving part of the engine, as usual.
The connection of valves D D and governor shown in the drawings consists of two links, g g, which are pivoted to the 4valves and to a eross-head, 7L, on the stem f of the governor, which extends through a suitable stufng-box in the steanrchest. As the speed ofthe engine increases, the valves D D are moved farther apart and steam is cut off at a smaller fraction of the stroke, and vice versa.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown a different form `of governor and valve, these being intended especially for air-compressor plant-s. In this case the valves D D, Fig. 2, are subjected to the action of the stiff springs GG,
which tend to move the same toward each other. These Springs encompass the guiderod E, and their pressure ou the valves is adjustable by means of set-screws g g', which bear against or are connected with a sleeve on the guidelrod. The governor F consists of a cylinder, F', containing a piston, H, the rod -h of which is connected with the valves D D,
as before described. The piston is actuated by air from the receiver R, which is led to the cylinder F by a pipe, R, and enters above or infront of the piston.
The springs G G can be set to any desired pressure, and if the air in the receiver exceed this'pressnre the eut-off valves D D will be moved to cut off the steam, as will presently be more fully explained.
When the air-compressors are used for sup plying air for mining purposes, it frequently happens that air is not used for a considerable period of time, and a high pressure in the reservoir results. the piston-governor, as described, so thatwhen the pressure in the reservoir reaches or eX- ceeds a certain point steam will almost entirely be out off from the steam-cylinder A of the compressor.
In addition to the regulator, I use the following device: In theair-cylinder A', Fig. 3, is formed a channel, i, which opens at each end ofthe cylinder, and at its central portion is formed a circular recess for the reception of a spring-pressedI plunger, I, which closes olf communication between the ends of the cylinder when it fills out said recess. rIhe plunger is connected by a rod with a piston, I', in a cylinder, I2, separated steam-tight from the plunger I. A steampipe, J, connects this 'Io prevent this I make use of lOO cylinder l2 with the cylinder F of the governor, and at a distance below its upper end,
so that when the piston H is moved to eut oil' the steam by the excess of pressure in the rc- 5 ceiver, and when it falls below the mouth of the pipe J, the air can vmake its way to the cylinder l2 and depress its piston l, whereby the channel t is cleared and the air drawn into the air-cylinder A simply is :forced around xo the cylinder from end to end, and no work is done by the compressor. \Vhen the pressure in the receiver lt falls below the limit set, the
piston H is moved upward by the springs G G, and the plunger l is moved to close the I5 channel in the air-receiver by its spring. The
exhaust-air from cylinder l' escapes through pipe J and out through an exhaust-port, 71", in
the cylinder F'. This port IlL is closed by the piston H when in its lowest position.
VTo regulate the draft of the furnace, of which S is the smoke-flue, I provide a damper, M, for said flue, which damper is fixed to a spindle, to 011e end of which is attached a weighted lever, N, that is connected by a link, 91, with the piston-rod o of a piston, O', moving in a cylinder, O. The lower end ol the cylinder is connected by a pipe, P, with the cylinder F at a distance below its upper end, so that when the piston H cuts off the steam 50 at the engine a-ir is admitted to the cylinder O and the piston O' is moved to close the damper S. rlhis cylinder O also exhausts through thc pipe P and cylinder F.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the longitudinallymoving main slide-valve C and its ports, the
secondary or eut-off valves l) D, movable' toward and from each otheron the main valve 40 inthe same longitudinal direction as the latter,
the vertical lengthwise-movable stem, the governor for operating the stem, and the links connected at one end with the stem and at their other ends, respectively, with the secondary valves, so that the lengthwise movements of the stem slide the secondary valves to and from cach other on the main valve to vary the point of cut-oil, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the main slidevalve O and its ports, of the secondary or cutoff valves D, the guide-bar E, on which said secondary valves move, the governor, the lengthwise-movable stem, and the links g, connected, respectively, to the valves and to the lengt-hwise-movable stem, substantially as described.
3. rlhe combination, with a main valve, of thc spring-pressed secondary or eut-off valves, a cylinder, a piston thereon subjected to a pressure, and connections between the cut-off valves and the piston, substantially as shown and described.
4. In an ai r-compressor plant, the combination, with the compressor and the receiver, of the cut-off valves D D for the steam-cylinder, the cylinder F', connected with the air-receiver at one end, and the piston H therein, connected with the cut-off valves, substantially as described.
5. In an air-compressor plant, the combination, with the compressor and thc receiver, of the cylinder F', connected with the receiver, the piston therein, the channel f1', formed in the air-cylinder of the compressor, the springpresscd plunger I, the auxiliary cylinder l, connected with the cylinder F, and a piston in the cyliuderl, connected with the plunger, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination of the steam-cylinder A. the slide-valve (l, having ports c c, the cnt-off valves D D, sliding to and from each other, the governor-cylinder F, the piston H, having the lengthwise-movable stem connected with the cut-off valves, the ai r-cylinder A', having the channel t', and auxiliary cylinder l?, containing the spring-pressed plunger I, having a piston, I, a pipe, J, connecting the auxiliary cylinder with the goverilor-cylinder, and the air-reservoir connected with the air-cylinder and with the governor-cylimler above the piston in the latter, substantially as described.
7. rlhe combination ofthesteam-cylinderA, the slide-valve C, having ports c c, the cut-off valves D D, movable toward and from each other, the governor-cylinder F', the piston H therein7 having the lengthwise-movable stem con nectedwith the cut-oil' valves, thedampercylinder O, containing the piston O', having the piston-rod o, the pipe l?, connecting the damper-cylinder with the go\'ern01.'cylinder, and the damper M, connected with the pistonrod, of the damper-cylinder, substantially as described.
