Abstract
A cartridge actuated bomb release mechanism or assembly in which malfunctioning is eliminated with the provision of a positive disconnect between the delay element body of the cartridge and the released forward plug that initially held ball detents in a locking relationship between wall openings of the cartridge chamber and the internally grooved piston sleeve to which a hatch opening block and bracket are attached or secured. By providing a 360* crimp in the cartridge case at the delay body peripheral groove, an O-ring positioned in the crimped area will seal the cartridge chamber and retain the delay body from interfering with release of the ball detents after initiation and forward movement of the plug member.

By providing a 360 crimp in the cartridge case at the delay body peripheral groove, an O-ring positioned in the crimped area will seal the cartridge chamber and retain the delay body from interfering with release of the ball detents after initiation and forward movement of the plug member.

CARTRIDGE ACTUATING DEVICE The invention described herein may be manufactured, used, and licensed by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to us of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to a cartridge actuated device and, more particularly, to a cartridge actuated release mechanism for high speed aerial delivery containers.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a cartridge actuated bomb release mechanism or assembly in which malfunctioning is eliminated.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a mechanism which, upon actuation, has a positive disconnect between two originally connected members of the mechanism.
These and other objects, features and advantages will become more apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing which is a longitudinal sectional view of a preferred arrangement embodying the principles of the invention.
The cartridge actuated bomb release mechanism or assembly, shown generally at 10, has a pair of brackets ll, 12 suitably secured to a predetermined cover and base portions l3, 14 of an aerial bomb arrangement when the bomb release and function requires separation of the bomb cover 13 from its base portion 14. Bracket l 1 is integral with a first block 15 that carries an adjustably mounted chamber 16. Bracket 12 is integral with a second block 17 which is adjustably mounted by threaded nuts or members l8, 19 to the threaded shank portion 20 of piston 21 that has an enlarged hollow cylindrical sleeve portion 22 which is slidably received by annular recess defining portions of the interior surface of cylindrical body members 23 and the external surface of the chamber 16 forwardly of its outwardly extending peripheral flange 24. The internal surface of the hollow piston sleeve has an annular groove 25 for receiving a plurality of laterally extending ball detents 26 that are normally biased outwardly by plug member through chamber apertures 27 to initially maintain the piston 21 secured to the chamber 16 by which brackets 11 and 12 also remain initially secured to each other.
The cartridge assembly that seats in chamber 16 includes a cartridge case 28 having a delay element body 29 and a forward end plug 30 seated therein. The transverse wall 31 at the forward end of body 29 has a central aperture 32 to provide for or permit fluid communication between the output charge 33, positioned forwardly of cartridge delay composition 34 and initiator 35, and the igniter grain 36 which is located along with propellant 37 in the rearwardly opening cavity of plug 30. The initiator is ignited by an appropriate primer 38 which is seated in the apertured based 39 of the cartridge case and ignited by an unlatched or released firing pin 40 of a firing head assembly 41 that has a forwardly opening threaded surface 42 threadedly secured to the chamber external rearward surface.
The delay element body 29 has an annular groove 43 in its peripheral surface to enable a full 360 crimped peripheral area of cartridge case 28 to be seated in groove 43. The case crimped area assumes the shape of the groove and receives an O-ring 44 having a high squeeze factor when installed which seals blow-by gases and precludes expansion or disengagement of crimped cartridge case from groove 43 at actuation. The forward end of the cartridge case is suitably crimped to a necked down portion of the plug 30 which has a longitudinal length less than the predetermined depth or length of clearance beyond the chamber end within the hollow recess of piston sleeve portion 22 during the latched condition of chamber 16 and sleeve 22.
The cylindrical body member 23 has a centrally apertured rearward wall 45 that slidably receives chamber 16 with the chamber flange 24 adapted to be locked by first block 15 in position seated or drawn against wall 45. Suitable O-rings 46, 47 carried by chamber flange 24 and piston sleeve 22 sealingly engage the inner wall of cylindrical body member 23. Thus, when developed pressure gas ejects the forward plug member 30 from its ball locking position in the chamber 16 and into the accommodating piston sleeve cavity, the compressed O- ring 44 will retain dela element body 29 and the cartrid e case 28 m the rearwar portion of chamber 16 such that t e ball detents 26 are free to fall out of their latching groove 25. This, of course, provides a positive disconnect between the cartridge chamber 16 and piston 21, such that upon firing of the cartridge relative motion can be provided between the brackets 1 l, 12 and their corresponding attachments.
We wish it to be understood that we do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
We claim:
1. In a cartridge actuated bomb release mechanism having a pair of brackets secured to predetermined portions of an aerial bomb and respectively integral with an adjustably mounted chamber carrying first block and a piston carrying second block, said chamber carrying a cartridge assembly and a firing head assembly for initiation thereof,
said cartridge assembly including a delay element body located in a rearward wall portion of said chamber, and a forward plug member positioned in the forward end of said chamber,
said piston having an enlarged cylindrical sleeve portion,
the internal surface of said sleeve portion having a peripheral groove and slidably receiving the chamber forward end,
said chamber forward end having laterally extending detents normally biased by said plug into engagement with said sleeve groove, said chamber having an outwardly extending peripheral flange rearwardly of said detents, a cylindrical body member housing at least a portion of said chamber and piston sleeve and having an inwardly directed annular flange at its rearward end for seating said chamber peripheral flange, the external rearward surface of said chamber having threaded means for receiving said adjustably first block and an internally threaded member of said firing head assembly,
said cartridge delay element having a peripheral external groove, and
a sealing member in said delay element groove and engaging said chamber rearward wall portion.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said piston sleeve upon assembly has a cavity of predetermined longitudinal depth exceeding and for accommodating the length of said forward plug member.

Claims (2)
1. In a cartridge actuated bomb release mechanism having a pair of brackets secured to predetermined portions of an aerial bomb and respectively integral with an adjustably mounted chamber carrying first block and a piston carrying second block, said chamber carrying a cartridge assembly and a firing head assembly for initiation thereof, said cartridge assembly including a delay element body located in a rearward wall portion of said chamber, and a forward plug member positioned in the forward end of said chamber, said piston having an enlarged cylindrical sleeve portion, the internal surface of said sleeve portion having a peripheral groove and slidably receiving the chamber forward end, said chamber forward end having laterally extending detents normally biased by said plug into engagement with said sleeve groove, said chamber having an outwardly extending peripheral flange rearwardly of said detents, a cylindrical body member housing at least a portion of said chamber and piston sleeve and having an inwardly directed annular flange at its rearward end for seating said chamber peripheral flange, the external rearward surface of said chamber having threaded means for receiving said adjustably first block and an internally threaded member of said firing head assembly, said cartridge delay element having a peripheral external groove, and a sealing member in said delay element groove and engaging said chamber rearward wall portion.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said piston sleeve upon assembly has a cavity of predetermined longitudinal depth exceeding and for accommodating the length of said forward plug member.
