UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MANETHO C. JACKSON, OF DENVER, COLORADO;
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MANETno C. J AOKSON,
. a citizen of Denver, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improve mentsin Horse-Powers for BalingI'resscs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to liorse-powers for baling-presses, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a horse-power for baling-presses by which a positive double reciprocating action will be imparted to the plunger of a baling-press .while the powersweep is performing a revolution; second, to provide a strong, effective, and inexpensive horse power for operating baling-presscs, that can be easily mounted on wheels for transportation. I accomplish these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of the entire machine with'one side of the frame removed and the crosspieces in section. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with the upper cross-timber of the frame broken away in order to show the mechanism below it.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the frame by which the operating parts of the device are supported. I v
B is a double cam formed as shown, and is held in position by an upright shaft, 0, which is' provided with a square projection, O, on its upper end. The lower end is formed with a shoulder,onwhich it rests. It is held in po-- sition and rotates in bearings I) and D, which are firmly attached to the main frame. The sweep E, to which the power is applied, is provided with a square socket, which fits over the square projection O on the upper end of SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1%. 367,106, dated July 26, 1887.

the shaft 0. The arm G is formed, as shown, and is pivoted to the frame A by the bolt F.
This arm is provided with a frietion-wheel,
H, heldin position by the bolt I, against which the face of the cam B operates. One end of the rods J and K are pivoted to the arm G by the bolt I. The cam L,with its arm L, (which is pivoted to the rod K by the bolt K,) is pivoted to the frame by the bolt L The rod M is pivoted to the rod J by the bolt N at one end. The opposite end is formed into an eye, by which it is connected to the plunger. This rod is held in position by the guide-boxes O and P, which are attached to the frame. On
the sides of the frame are attached the axles R, on which wheels may be placed for the purpose of transferring the machine from place to place.
In operating, the power is applied to the sweep E, which rotates the cam B, which forces the arms G K L, cam L, and rods M and J from the position shown in dotted lines to the position indicated in the solid lines,
and as the cam B continues in its course it comes in contact with the cam L and'turns it to one side, as shown in dotted lines, which brings the mechanism back to its normal position. Thus it willv be seen that each arm of the cam as it makes a revolution causes the rod M to move back and forth, which gives a double reciprocating movement of the rod M with each revolution of the sweep.
Having, now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a horse power for operating balingpresses, the combination of the connectingrods M and J, arm G, friction-wheel H, cam L, rod L, rod K, cam B, shaft 0, and sweep E,
and frame A, substantially as described, and
M ANETHO G. JACKSON.
