Be it known that I, EnNnsr R. Miennnm's, a citizen of the United States, residingr at Sycamore, in the county of Vyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Halters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for rope or other halters, and is an improvement upon Letters Patent granted to mc, No. 332,271, dated December 15, 1885; and it has for its object to provide suitable means or fastening devices in the construction or formation of a halter that can readily adjust or adapt itself to animals of different size.

The said improvements, comprising a double ring formed integrally with a narrow metal plate having tongues formed thereon at right angles to each side of the plate upon the inner surface of said tongues, are sharp V-shaped beads, which, when the meeting ends of tongues are brought and clasped together, assume an annular form, the beads thereon embedding themselves firmly in the rope and holding the parts together.

The improvements further consist in the combination, with the above, of a double loop or slide, by which the halter is adjusted.

Vith this end in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had, and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved halter and its fastening devices applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fastening device preparatory to applying it to the halter. Fig. 3 is a erosssectiou of Fig. 2, showing the Aannular clinching-beads embedded in the rope.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several figures.

In the drawings, the letter A represents a metallic plate ofsuitable metal, upon the outer end of which is formed a double ring, B, and

at the opposite end and in the center of this plate are two tongues or lips, C, having upo'n their inner surfaces and extending the full length of said lips two beads, c, which, when they are closed around the end of the rope, as shown in Fig. l, are annular in form, as well as the tongues or lips O. These beads upon their outer edges are made sharp, and resemble in cross-section the letter V, as clearly 6o shown in Fig. 3. The several features just described are all formed integral with or struck up7 from the metallic plate A; or, if preferred,thetongues orli ps Gand the double ring B may be made separate and soldered together.

A double loop or slide, D, is located upon the halter and diametrieally opposite to the fastening device, and is used in connection with the same, by means of which and the fast- 7o ening device the halter is securely held t0- getlier when formed, and can be adjusted as desired to suit different sized animals.

The purpose of forming the beads c upon their outer edges is that they shall present a feather or cutting edge, which will bite the rope, or embed themselves therein in such a manner as to prevent all tendency of the rope slipping from its place however great the strain may be which is brought to bear upon 8o the halter.

The halter is formed as follows: One end of the ropeislaid upon the plate, and the tongues or lips are then bent over or around said end of the rope and the meeting ends brought together and closed, the beads upon the inner surfaces of the tongues in the meantime embedding themselves sufiiciently deep in the rope as to give a good bite therein, which firmly and tightly secures this end of the rope 9o having the double ring thereon, after which the free end of the rope is then passed up through the first loop of the double loop or slide next to the fastening just described and over the dividing bar therein, and down 95 through the adjoining or second loop, when it is then turned, and a similar movementof the rope in the opposite direction through the double loop or slide is given, which forms a small rope-loop, and which also forms at this 10o point the rope-loop or the nose-piece of the halter, from whence it is carried from this double metallic loop or slide to the first or next ring of the double ring, and passed up through the same and over the outel` end of the metallic plate downwardly through the adjoining ring of the double ring, and here at this point the larger rope-loop or head-piece ofthe halter is formed, and 'from thence through ihe small rope-loop of the halter, this or the free end of the rope then constituting thelead for hitehing purposes. y

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The herein-described fastening device, consisting, essentially, of the double ring B, plate A, tongues or lips C, having beads 0 thereon upon their inner surfaces, thewhole being constructed integrally, substantially as and for the purpose herein' set forth.

2. The combination, With the halter constructed as described, ofthe plate A, provided with double ringB, tongues or lips C, having the V-shaped beads c upon their inner surfaces, and the double loop D, or slide, all arranged and operated as herein 'set forth.
