CAR-AXLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,953, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed May 2, 1887. Serial No. 236,932. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, MARsnxLL J. I-IATCHER, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Macon, county of Bibb, State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Axles for Cars, &e., of which the `following is a full and exact description, reference be' ing had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention consists in the combination, with a tubular axle, of reversible boxes adapted to fit in the ends thereof, and reversible spindles for operating in said boxes, and for receiving the traction-wheels of ear or wagons and other vehicles.
My improvements will be readily linderstood by referring to the accompanying drawings, whereon Figure l represents the opposite ends ofan axle provided with theimprovements, one end being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the reversible boxes. Fig. 3 is a similar view ofa jour nal box with the central groove omitted. Fig. 4 is a like view of one of the reversible spindles with end collars or heads separated therefrom, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an axle having a square end and a detached reversible box adapted to lit therein.

' or provided with screw-threads, to receive when the said boxes are permitted to run loosely within the axle Anotherl advantage in forming a channel around the box is that in event of any injury being done tothe surface of the box by the action of the setserews pressing against same, the injured parts will not come in contact with the tube and thus jam the box within same, as would be the ease were there no channel made around the box, as stated.
Instead of the axle being cylindrical in form, as shown in Fig. 1, it may be made with one or more llat sides,or with its body round and ends square, as shown in Fig. 5, in which event the outer diameter of the journal-boxes should be made of similar form to the ends of the axle.
In the application of my invention the end collars or heads are iirst removed from the spindles, which, if not already provided with central collars, next have said collars slipped thereon. One end of the spindle is then 'inserted in one of the journal -boxes, wherein it is held by the outer collar, which is next screwed on or into the end of the spindle for said purpose. The box, with its spindle, is then inserted within one end of the axle and the setscrews applied in the side perforations thereof until the points of the said screws enter the channel around the journalbox and come in contact or in close proximity with the bottom of said channel. The wheels are then applied to the outer ends of the spindles and the remaining end collars or heads applied to hold same thereon.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent,
l. The combination of a tubular axle proY vided with set-screws, as described, with reversible journal-boxes adapted to lit within the ends of said axle and form bearings for the inner ends of the wheel-spindles, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a tubular axle, the reversible journatboxes adapted to fit in the ends thereof, the reversible boxes each provided with a central groove around its outer diameter, andthe outer portions of the axle provided with set-screws for engaging the said the detached end collars or heads, with a tu- :3 groove, substantially as and for the purpose bular axle provided with end journal-boxes,
