Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB S. LOVE, OF GENEVA, OHIO.
BLACKBOARD-ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,6'74, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed June 1, 1F86. Serial No. 203,744. (Model.)
T @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, JAooin S. LOWE, of Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Blackboard Eraser; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof.
The nature of my invention relates to the combination of material and construction of the said article, which consists in making the face of felt at the ends, while thc central or intermediate portion,of fustian of any suitable surface, form, or configuration, is folded or lapped over a filling, and then glued orotherwise fastened to the handle with polishing-felt attached tothe ends by any suitable device for the purpose designed.
To enable others to fully understand the nature of said invention that it may be made and used, reference will be had to the following specification and to the annexed drawings, making part ofthe same, in which- Figure l is a side view of the said eraser. Fig. 2 is an end view; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 4, a. transverse vertical section in direction of the line :v x, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a face view.
Likelettcrs designate like partsiu the drawings and specification.
The handle A, Figs l and 2, is preferably made of wood7 and of such shape best adapted in use to the hand, and having an extension, B, to which is attached the erasing material for the face of the eraser. rIlhe central part er section, C, Figs. 3, Ll, and 5, is composed of fustian, its face being of any suitable form or coniiguration for the purpose designed. This fustian is lapped over an interior packing, D, Figs. 3 and 4, consisting ot' laminated pasteboard or its equivalent, which forms a cushion, and also raises up the face C, of fustian, to the same plane with the felt ends E F, as seen in the drawings. The central section of fustian G, Figs 3 and 4t, or its equivalent, after being so lapped over the filling D as to inclose it, is then secured to the extension B by being cemented thereto or otherwise properly attached. The felt ends E and F are then fastened to said extension in close contact with the central section, as seen in Fig. 5.
rlhe face B of the extension may be either flat or curved longitudinally, and as the felt is usually thicker than the fustian, a central or intermediate section may form a projection from the face B ofthe extension IE, and the fustian laid over it so to be in the same plane with the vfelt ends.
In the use of erascrs the friction is mostly at the ends of the instrument; and from the nature of my improvement it has a decided advantage in durability over those ordinarily in use.
Strips or pieces (preferably) of poiishiugfelt of suitable thickness cover over the ends ofthe extension B, as shown in the drawings.
Felt, being thicker and more compact, will wear much longer than fustian or corduroy when subjected to the same amount of practical use. The relative value of wear may be formulated as felt, 2; fustian or corduroy, l. The fustian, being` in the central part of the eraser, is subjected to less friction than at the ends; hence there is a uniform wear of the entire face at less cost with increased durability, while the combination of fustian with felt, as described, (thereby uniting thc eras ing qualities of eacln) will together form such an,erasing-surface as will remove all marks and traces of any crayon now in general use, leaving the board clean and free from the crayon smudge7 so common on schootroon'i blackboards.
Au addition to the advantages derived fromable properties, separately considered, While and the handle provided with an extension, re
at the same time I produce a better article 3, substantially as and for the purpose set at less cost, as fustian is less expensive than felt. forth.
What I claim as my invention, and desire In testimony whereof I affix my signature in Y 5 to secure by Letters Patent, ispresence of two witnesses.
In :t blackboard eraser, the combination of JACOB S. LOWE. fustian with polishing-felt forming the eras- Vitnesses: ing-surfaee, arranged, as shown, in connee- XV. H. BURRIDGE,
