Abstract
A device which prevents water which drains under the gravel on roofs from causing rot and deterioration to the eaves and facial boards. This device allows the water to drain through perforations in its body so that the water will escape to the outside of the facial board. The device is one-piece in construction and has a multiple number of drainage openings for the water to seep into and out of the device, in order that a roof will be dry.

FREDERICK W SCHEAER DRAINING TYPE GRAVEL GUARD This invention relates to drainage devices and more particularly to a device for allowing the escape of water from beneath gravel on rooftops.
It is therefore the primary purpose of this invention to provide a drain gravel guard which when secured to built-up roofs will allow the water that is entrapped beneath the gravel, to drain off.
Another object of this invention is to provide a guard of the type described which will prevent the rot and deterioration which destroys the eaves and facial boards of a building. A certain amount of rain water is trapped on built-up roofs that has no way of draining off, the water finding its way under the gravel and onto layers of felt paper and tar because inevitable there are spots which are not completely sealed because the tar is usually applied hot and in some instances cold tar is applied that will run because of the pitch angle and because it cannot be seen when the felt paper is applied, therefore, there is always a way for the water to drain under the gravel, thus causing rot and deterioration.
This invention serves to eliminate the heretofore mentioned problem by allowing the trapped water to drain through perforations in the device in order to escape to the outside of the facial board.
Other objects of this invention are to provide a draining type gravel guard which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the present invention shown secured to a roof;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view taken along the lines 2-2 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view taken along the lines 31-13 of FIG. 1.
According to this invention, a draining type gravel guard is provided with a hollow vertical portion 11 having an upwardly extending portion 11 also of hollow configuration. Gravel guard 10 has a horizontal hollow portion 12 having a plurality of perforations 13 for carrying water from roof 14. The hollow vertical portion 11 of guard 10 is provided with a plurality of openings 15 for the drainage of water and an opening 16 at the lower extremity of vertical portion 11, allows for the water to drain downward along side of the facial board 17.
In use, drain type gravel guard 10 is secured to a building in a suitable manner with the vertical hollow portion 11 adjacent to the facial board 17, and with the horizontal portion 12 extending parallel with roof l4 beneath the gravel, (not shown). Water is then allowed to enter the perforations l3 and 15 of guard 10 and travels outwards from the opening 16, thus allowing for roof 14 to be dry and not accumulate water beneath the gravel.
What I now claim is:
l. A drain type gravel guard for built-up roofs comprising a hollow vertical portion, a hollow horizontal portion extending from said vertical portion and an upper extension carried by said vertical portion for water drainage from roofs, wherein said drain type gravel guard comprises, in combination, a unitary member including a vertical portion and horizontal portion, one edge of horizontal portion being integral with one side of vertical portion extending lower than horizontal portion, each of said portions being comprised of spaced apart flat walls, with space there between so as to allow flow of draining water therethrough, said horizontal portion having an underside which is positioned in spaced apart relation and attached to top edge of roof, the upper portion of said horizontal portion provided with a plurality of openings therethrough so as to allow communication of water settled upon said roof to enter said space between walls of said horizontal portion and said space of said horizontal portion communicating with said space of said vertical portion so that water may be drained from said horizontal into said vertical portion, the opposite ends of said vertical portions having openings to said space so as to permit said water to drain outwardly therefrom and along side of a facial board of said building.
Claims (1)
1. A drain type gravel guard for built-up roofs comprising a hollow vertical portion, a hollow horizontal portion extending from said vertical portion and an upper extension carried by said vertical portion for water drainage from roofs, wherein said drain type gravel guard comprises, in combination, a unitary member includinG a vertical portion and horizontal portion, one edge of horizontal portion being integral with one side of vertical portion extending lower than horizontal portion, each of said portions being comprised of spaced apart flat walls, with space there between so as to allow flow of draining water therethrough, said horizontal portion having an underside which is positioned in spaced apart relation and attached to top edge of roof, the upper portion of said horizontal portion provided with a plurality of openings therethrough so as to allow communication of water settled upon said roof to enter said space between walls of said horizontal portion and said space of said horizontal portion communicating with said space of said vertical portion so that water may be drained from said horizontal into said vertical portion, the opposite ends of said vertical portions having openings to said space so as to permit said water to drain outwardly therefrom and along side of a facial board of said building.
