PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PIANos.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,285, dated July 12,` 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, NoRvAL E. WILSON and WILLIAM G. WILSON, both of Hartford,

in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Pedal Attachments'for Pianos, of which the following is a description, .reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure lisa plan view of a device embodying our invention. The object of our invention is to provide a' drawings are shown as supported in the baseV of the lyre b in the usual manner.

The letter c denotes a support for the supplemental pedals d, which in the form shown consists of a stool, c, bearing along its upper surface, and near the front edge ofthe stool, a

rail,f, dovetailed on and movable along which are thepedal-blocks g. These blocks are held in any desired part of their path by means of the clamp-screw h, borne in threaded sockets in the blocks and adapted to be forced against the upper side of the rail. Each supplemental pedal is pivoted to the upper part of a pedalblock, and also to a plunger, il, that passes down through the slot e in the top ofthe stool, so as to rest upon the top of the pedal a when the stool is in the proper position for use. The adjustable arm .k is attached to the under side of the stool by means of the bolt Z and guide-pins m, and this arm projects beyond the front edge of the stool andunderneath the bottom of the lyre b, as illustrated in Fig. 2. In order to use our device, the front edge of the stool c is placed against the base of the lyre b, the arm 7c thrust underneath the lyre, and the plungers i resting each upon a pedal, the pedal-blocks being adjusted so as to cause the plunger of each supplemental pedal to rest directly on each of the main pedals of the piano. The grasp of the arm k upon the under side of the lyre may be adjusted by means of the butterfly-nut Z on the bolt l.

The stool affords a rest for the heel of the player, and the supplemental pedals are used exactly as are the pedalsof the piano proper.

The rods or plungers z' may be made in sections, so that their length may be adjusted to conform to the height of pedals of different musical instruments, which vary considerably, and to support the pedals din proper position for use-that is, about level.

In order that the plunger may bear directly on the pedal a, the pedal d isprovided with an ear having a slot through which a pinin the plunger is passed, so that, notwithstanding the pedal d moves in an are of a circle, the plunger z' will move in a right line.

As the arm 7c is secured to the stool at about the same vertical plane with the plungers, great stability is secured, and the use of our device will not be so liable to injure or break the lyre as devices heretofore employed.

We are aware of the pedal attachment patented by W. Winter, December 11, 1883, No. 290,163, and therefore do not claim the construction he shows; but

We claim as our invention- The herein described improved pedal attachment, consisting of the stool c, the pedalblocks g, adjustable thereon transversely with respect to the lyre", pedals d, pivoted to said blocks, a slot, e, in said stool, a plunger, i, movable vertically' through said slot, having a pin-and-slot connection with the pedals d, to bear directly on the pedals of the instrument, and the arm 7c, secured to the under side of the stool and adjustable vertically, substantially as shown.
