SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,779, dated July 5, 1887. Application filed December 21, 1856. Serial No. 222,182. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES WV. BONIA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephonic Transmitters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that form of [O telephonic transmitters having multiple contacts or pairs of electrodes having separate inductoriums and separate batteries for the primaries of the inductoriu ms, the secondaries of which are all in circuit with the line; and
1 it has for its object the construction and arrangement of the parts of the transmitter to secure an effective and durable instrument.
My invention accordingly consists of the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, having reference particularly to a diaphragm in contact with a plate or disk upon which is arranged a group of segmental electrodes, each of which is in contact with two electrodes in 2 eluded in a separate battery-circuit, which also includes the primary of a separate inductorium, the secondary of which forms part of a line-circuit common to all the secondaries of the separate inductoriums, to spring-pressure devices for maintaining the plate or disk in contact with the diaphragm, and separate spring-pressure devices for each one of the two electrodes contacting with the segmental electrodes for varying and maintaining the initial 3 5 contact between the same.
' Reference being had to the annexed drawi ngs,which show a transmitter embodying my improvements, Figures 1 and 3 are vertical sections; and Fig. 2 is a diagram of electrodes 0 and preferable arrangement of same and circuit-connections.
A represents a transmitter-casing having a removable cap or cover, a, provided with mouth-piece a and diaphragm B, which may be hinged to the cap a, as indicated at b, Fig.
1, or be affixed thereto in the usual manner, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Back of the diaphragm is a disk, 0, of non-conducting material, having on its front side a central pin or stud for 0 contact with the diaphragm, and on its rear side an annularly-arranged series of segmentally-configured electrodes, 0'. The disk 0 is provided with spring d and tension-screw d, suitably arranged to press the disk toward the diaphragm B. 5
E represents electrodes for contact with the segmental electrodes 0, which electrodes E have right-angled arms 6, pivoted to bars F, secured to casing A, and are provided with springs G for keeping them in contact with the segmental electrodes 0. The action of springs G G and spring (Z is toward the diaphragm, the former maintaining contact between the electrodes E c, and the latter keep ing the disk 0 in contact with the diaphragm. By adjusting tension-screw d the contact between the electrodes may be varied, as desired.

Each electrode E may contact with a separate segment or electrode 0, and each have a separate circuit, each including a battery and a primary of an inductorium, as shown and described in an application filed October 21, 1886, Serial No. 216,799; but I prefer to make the electrodes 0 large enough to have contact with two electrodes E E, as shown in Fig.2, and include each electrode c and its two electrodes E in aprimary, 1, of an inductorium, I, which primary includes a battery.

What I claim is- 1. A telephonic transmitter having a diaph'ragm, a disk in contact with the diaphragm, electrodes in contact with said disk, spring devices for said disk and electrodes, and separate battery and inductoriums for separate contacting electrodes, substantially as set go forth.
2. A telephonic transmitter having a diaphragm, a disk in contact with the diaphragm,
a group of segmental electrodes on said disk, electrodes in contact with the segmental electrodes, contact pressure devices for said disk and for said electrodes, separate inductoriums and batteries for each group of contacting electrodes, and a line-circuit common to the secondaries of all the inductoriums, substan- IOO tially as set forth.
