.of wool lfibers produced by passing woolen scraps through a picker and then through a lapper. Such wool filling is usually of dark color, and although by its use a very warm and serviceable comfortable may be made, it has not the soft feeling of a comfortable lled with carded cotton.V Y

In themanufacture of comfortables having one sidecovered with a fabric of abright and uniform color, such as cardinal red, the wool filling, ifit be immediately backof thefabric, is disadvantageous, because its dark eolorwill show somewhat through the covering fabric, or will modify the color thereof to such anextent as to impair the appearance of the comfortable.

The wool filling is desirable because of its warmth and because its cost is less than carded cotton; and the objects of my invention are to obtain, .in a comfortable having its filling largely of uncarded wool fiber, the softness due to the presence of carded ber, and also the handsome appearance due tothe presence immediately back of the covering fabric of white or light-colored fiber, which will not modify the color of a fabric such as cardinal red. Y Y In carrying out my invention I make the lling principally of a layer of wool or other uncarded batting, and I face such main layer or bodyv of the filling on one or each side with a layer of carded stock, such as cotton, the two layers being substantially coextensive. The uncarded stock, if of wool, will usually be of a dark color or nearly black, and in order not to modify the color-of the covering fabric I prefer to have the carded facing layer or layers of white or other light color or shade.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a comfortable embodyingmy invention, a portion of the covering fabric being laid back to expose the filling, and a portion of the facing layer of carded cotton batting being also laid or folded back to expose the main layer or body of the filling, which is of uncarded batting; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the `filling embodying my invention. v Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures. i

A designates the covering fabric on the sides or opposite faces of the comfortable, and'B designates the filling thereof, the facing or covering fabrics A and the filling B being quilted in'any desired pattern.

'Usually the filling B in comfortables has been of one material throughout. If such lling be wholly of carded material, such as cot ton, the cost of the comfortable is increased, and if it be wholly of uncarded wool of a Ydark color the V.comfortable has not the softness to touch that is desirable, although it is warm and serviceable and not expensive; and if the covering fabric A be of some 'colors-such, for example, as cardinal redthe darkor black color of the filling will modify the color of the fabric and impair its appearance. I In carrying out my invention I do not make the filling of one quality of material throughout; 'but I makeV the filling ofa main layer or body, b, and a facing layer, b', very much thinner than the main layer or body and applied to one or each side or face thereof. In the present example of my inventionthe main layer or body b has a facing layer, b, applied to each'of its sidesvor faces.

. For economy and warmth I make the main `layer or body b of the filling of a bat or lap of uncarded wool or other fiber, which may be produced by passing scraps of woolen cloth through apicker and then through a lapper, and forl the facing layer b', I use carded material, such as cotton, which gives to the exterior of the comfortable a softness to the touch which is desirable. When the covering fabric A is of a brilliant color, such as cardinal red, on one or both faces of the comfortable, I prefer that the facing layer b of carded batting shall be white or of a light color, which will not modify the color of the covering fabric by showing through the same.

By my invention I provide a comfortable ICO which is as soft to the touch and of as handsome appearance :is one lilled with carded cotton, and which is Warmer and can be made und sold at a much less price than such cotton- 5 filled comfortable. When :L comfortable :is made with a filling consisting of a body or main layer, i'), of any uncurded batting, and it facing layer, Z1', of carded batting, the advantages of low cost are secured, Whether both layers be of cotton or Wool or the moin layer or body of either cotton or Wool.

XVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The comfortable herein described, having 15 n covering fabric and :t lling composed of a main layer or body, b, of uncardcd batting and n facing layer or layers, b', of carded batting, said layers being substantially coincident and eoextensive, substantially as :md for the pur pose herein set forth.

2. The comfortable herein described, having a covering fabric and a filling composed of a.. main layer or body, b, of Woolen stock and o. facing layer or layers, b', of cotton, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. 2 5
