FRIEDRICH TIVICK, OF SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED LAND-ROLLER AND CLOD-CRUSHER.
EPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 365,209, dated June 21, 1887.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH Twrcrc, of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Laud-Roller and Clod'Crusher, of which the following is'a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aplanview of my combined landrollcr and clod-erusher, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 shows the inner side of one of the side bars of the frame. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the machine. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a colter-shaft and a cross-section of the shaft-bearings. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a central section and showing a part of the main frame. Fig. 6 *is a sectional elevation ofone of the colters. Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation of the mechanism for connecting a wheel with the main frame.
The object ofthis invention is to improve the construction of the combined land-rollers and clod-crushers for which Letters Patent No. 339,601 were issued to me April 6, 1886, in such a manner as to make them more convenient in use and more reliable in operation.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the machine, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents the main frame of the machine, to the centers of the cross bars of which is attached the tongue B. The side bars, C, of the frame A are made of iron, have their middle parts curved downward, and have flanges D at their ends, to receive the ends of the crossbars of the said frame, and flanges E at their centers, to receive the mechanism for connecting the wheels and the eolter-shafts with the main frame, as will be hereinafter described.
To the centers of the side bars, C, of the frame A are attached bolts F, to which are pivoted, at their angles, the elbow-levers G. To the short arms of the elbow-levers G are attached the axles II of the wheels I, that carry the machine. The other arms of the elbowlevers Gare made long, or have handles attaehed to them, so that they can be readily operated. Vith this construction, when the short arms of the elbow-levers G are in ahorizontal position and the long arms vertical, the frame A and its attachments will be lowered, and the machine will rest and be carried upon the colters, hereinafter described. Vhen the long arms of the elbow-levers G are swung down into a horizontal position, the short arms of the said lovers will be swung down into a vertical position, the frame A and its attachments will be raised, raising the colters from the ground, and the machine will rest and be carried upon the wheels I. The outer ends of the long arms of the elbow-levers G, when in a horizontal position, rest in keepers J, attached to the frame A, and are secured in the said keepers by pins K, passed through them above the said ends.
L are circular colters, the sides of the faces of which are beveled upon a curve to form ta pered edges, as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 6. The colters L may be of any desired diameter from twelve to twenty-eight inches, are preferably cast hollow, (see Fig. 6,) and are placed side by side upon two shafts, M, where they are secured in place by washers N and set-screws O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The two shafts M are placed parallel with each other, and their ends are secured to the under sides of the side bars, C, of the frame A by bearings 1?, bolted to flanges upon the said side bars in such positions that the edges of the colters of the one shaft will be in the spaces between the edges of the colters of the other shaft, as shown in Fig. 1. The shafts M are tubular, have their ends closed by plugs Q or caps, and have holes R in the sides, near their ends, eonnecting with annular grooves in the inner surfaces of the bearings I, so that oil poured into oil-cups S on the upper parts of the said bearings will flow into the interiors of the said shafts.
In the shafts M, within the hubs of the colters L, are formed holes T, through which oil can escape to lubricate the bearings of the said colters.
To the front and rear crossbars, both or either, of the frame A are attached bars U, in the adjacent sides of which are formed vertical grooves V,to receive ribs IV, formed upon the outer sides of the side bars of the vertical frames X, so that the said frames can. be moved up and down vertically.
To the lower ends of the side bars of the v by washers a and set-screws b, as hereinbefore attached to cross-bars j.
frames X are attached perforated tubular shafts Y, provided with colters Z, secured in place described with reference to the shafts M and colters L. a
To supports a, attachedto the centers of the 'top bars of the frames X, are pivoted the ends of levers cl,whieh are fulerumed to standards 6, attached to the tongue B. The inner ends of the levers d engage with catch-bars f, attached to the frame A, so that the said levers will be held securely in place when adjusted to raise the frames Xand colters Z away from the ground.
' g is the drivers seat, the standard h of which is attached to the tongue B.
,z' are scrapers, the engaging ends of which are so formed as to fit into the spaces between the beveled edges of the colters, and thus.remove any soil that may have lodged in the said spaces. The shanks of the scrapers i are The forward cross bar j is secured to the bars 10, attached to the frame Aby bolts Z, which pass through short slots in the said bars 76, so that the said crossbar j and its scrapers can be moved forward or back to adjust the engaging ends of the said scrapers at any desired closeness to the colters L. To the rear cross-bar j are attached the forward ends of the plates m, the rear ends of which are secured to the rear cross-bar of the frame A by bolts n. The rear ends of the plates at are slotted to receive the bolts 12, so that the rear cross-bar j can be moved forward or back to adjust the engaging ends of its scrapers to any desired closeness to the colters.
-I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a combined land roller and clodcrusher, the combination, with the middle part of the end of the frame A, of the bars U, having vertical grooves V, the sliding frame X, carrying a series of beveled-edged colters, and having tongues "W engaging with the having outlet oil-holes T within the hubs of the said colters, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the colter-bearings can be readily oiled,as set forth.
3. In a combined land roller and clod crusher, the combination, with the frame and a series of colters having beveled'edges, of a cross-bar adj ustabl y secured to the said frame, and scrapers secured to said bar, whereby provision is made for adjusting the said .scrapers to or from the colters, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a combined land roller and clodcrusher, the combination, with the frame A and the forward series of colters, L, having beveled edges, of the scrapers i, the cross-bar j, carrying the said scrapers, the slotted bars lc, attached to the frame A, and the connect" ing-bolts l, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the spaces between the said edges will be kept clear ofsoil, as set forth.
5. In a combined land-roller and clodcrusher, the combination, with the frame A and the wheels I, of the side bars, 0, provided with the flanges D E and the pivot-bolts 1 the elbow-levers G, pivoted to thcsaid bolts,
and the axles I-I, attached to thelower ends of the said elbow-levers, substantially as herein shown and described;
FRIEDRICH TWICK.
