YARN-SEPARATING DEVICE FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,155, dated June 21, 1887.

T0 al whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gusta-wus E. TAFT, of NVhitinsville, in the county of XVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Yarn-Separating Devices for Spinning Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication.
This invention relates to a separator-plate mechanism, or an apparatus for operating separator-plates or th read-guards in spinning-ma chines.
In spinning machines it is desirable t0 place the spindles as close together as practicable, so as to get the largest possible nn mber in one machine and under the control of one operator. XVith the increase of the speed with which the modern spindles are run the centrifugal force throws the yarn farther from the spindle than when low speed has been used, and the globe or balloon described bythe yarn between the guide-wire and the traveler on the ring is increased in diameter. Under these conditions partitions or separators placed between the adjacent spindles have become a necessity, and the arrangement by which such separators have heretofore been secured to and carried by the ring or traverse rail is objectionable, as it increases the weight of the ringrail and obstrnets the free access to the cop or bobbin in piecing or defun. The longer the distance between the guide-wire and the traveler the larger will be the balloon or the farther will the yarn be thrown ont, while when the ri ng-rail is raised and is neari ng the guidewire the shorter yarn between the guide-wire and traveler will not balloon any more than is required to clear the cop or bobbin.
One object of my invention is to provide a series of separator-plates, which are automatic and positive in action.
Another object of my invention is to adapt a separator-plate mechanism to a double form of spinning-machine, and which will be actuated by a single cam.
Another object of my invention is to render the operations of the mechanism casier by the use ofcounter-balances for the separator-plates.
To the above pur ioses, my invention consists in particular combinations, set forth in the claims at the close of this specification, and which comprise the followingdevices: the sepator-plates, theplate-shafts, a counter-balance, slotted operating-levers for the plate-shafts, a pivoted and a slotted rocker, aconnecting-rod, a cam-bar and a cam, a counter-weighthaving a ropc-and-pulley connection, and the hangers for the plate-shafts.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will now proceed to describe the saine in reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the best form thereof so far devised by me, and which form admits of various modifications in the details.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical sectional view of an ordinary double form of spinning-machine, showing the side framing, and in which is embodied my improved separator-platemechanism. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged broadside view of one of my separator plates andaconnterpoise, both mounted upon theplate-shaft shown in section. Fig. 3 represents atop plan View of Fig. 2 partly broken away.

Referring to the drawings, 6 designates part of the framing of an ordinary form of spinning-machine having a double system of spindles, 7, which are rotated in the usual manner by nieans ofthe main shaft S. The traversing-ring or traverse-rail 9 is provided with the rings 10 for the ordinary travelers (not shown) and is moved up and down by wellknown mechanism, which is here omitted, and serves to control the building of the yarn l1 upon the cops or bobbins placed upon the spindles. The guide-wires l2 are secured to the guide-blocks and are located one above each spindle.
In order to prevent the -interference of the spread-out yarns ruiming to adj accnt spindles, I have devised the following mechanism, which renders the aforesaid evil impossible. The plateshaft 13 is mounted and turns in the hangers 14, secured to the machine-frame. The separator-plate l5 is formed with a broad flat body of the shape shown, and is provided with a shank having a transverse perforation, 16, to receive the plateshaft. In the recess IOO xtions 16 of the plates conform thereto, so that all the plates may be maintained in the same position relative to the horizontal plane, though they may be adjusted sidewise along the plate-shaft, as desired. The operatinglever 20 is formed with a slot, 21, and is rigidly secured upon the plate-shaft 13, so that by depressing and elevating the lever the plateshaft may be turned in its bearings, and thereby vibrate the attached separator-plate in a vertical plane. The operatinglevers are actuated by the pivoted rockers 22 and 23, which are each provided with a fixed stud, 24, working in the slots 2l of the operating levers, and which are each pivoted to the machine-frame at the points 25. These rockers are hinged together by the inner ends at the point 26, so that when one of the rockers is rocked both of them will vibrate in Vunison in the vertical plane. By virtue of the play in the two hinged joints 25, together with that of the hinged joint 26, the rockers are permitted to freely move through the required space and to pass without jarrthe central point between the full and dotted line positions, respectively. However, to insure the smooth working of the rockers, if preferred, the rocker 23 may be formed near its inner end with the slot 5() forthe hinge-pin of thejoint 2G to move in as the rockers oscillate. The rockers are operated by means of the connecting-.rod 27, which is provided with a pin, 28, which pin takes in the slot 29, formed in the rocker 22. The object of having the pin 28 take through the slit 29 is to afford means for tightening up the cam-bar against the cam, and the pin after being set remains immovable in the slot. To the foot of the rod 27 is pivoted the canrbar 30, which is hinged to the post 31. The post 31 is vertically adjustable by virtue of the slot 32 and the binding-screw 33, which holds the post to the machine-frame.
The cam 34 is keyed on the cam-shaft 35, which is mounted in the machine-frame, and may be driven in any suitable manner by connection with the main shaft 8. This cam is so arranged that at every revolution of the same the rockers are moved down and up again on their pivots, and this indirectly moves the separator-plates from the horizontal position into the vertical position, which is shown in dotted lines, and back again through thel quadrant of a circle.
It is necessary to have the cam-bar in eon. stant engagement with the cam, and to accomplish thisv I provide the rocker 23 with a counter-weight, 36, to which is fastened a rope or cable, 37, which is passed over a pulley, 38, Vfixed to the machine-frame, and the other end of the .rope is secured to a link connected to the rocker 23. This weight 36 serves to hold the rocker 23 in the upper position; likewise the rocker 22, which, by means of the connecting-rod 27, keeps the cam-bar in engagement with the cam.
I find that the working of the entire mechanism is much improved and rendered easier in operation by providing eountcrbalances 39, for eounterbalancing the weight of the sepa retor-plates, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These counter-balances are formed with an eye, 40, to receive the plate-shaft,upon which they are mounted and held by theset-screw 41, which is arranged similar to the set-screw .17 of the plates. The counter-balance 39 is disposed in an opposite manner to the plat-es, as shown, and any number' of them may be used to gain the required balance.
From the foregoing description the following operation of my improved mechanism will be readily understood. The traversing-ring or traverserail 9 is at the lowest limit of` travel; likewise are the separator-plates 15 at the lowest limit of vibration. The relative movements of the ring or traverse rail and the plates are synchronous, and are gaged so that Y as the ring-rail starts upward the cam begins to draw down the rocker, and thereby to elevate the separator-plates, which continue to move about the 'axis of the plate-shaft whileA the ring-rail moves upward, and until the vertical dottedline position is reached, when the ringrail, having arrived at the upper limit of travel, stops and then descends. Then the counter-weight 36 acts to reverse the rockers by depressing them, and this lowers the separator-plates, which follow down after the descending ring-rail, and these simultaneous movements are repeated by the running of the machine.
By virtue of my improved mechanism the broadsides of the separator-plates are always held parallel with the axes of the spindle, and the plates are automatically moved in unison with the rise and fall of -tlie ring or traverse rail, the plates being always out of contact with the ring-rail.
An important advantage of myinvention is IIO that the ring-rail is not encumbered with the separator-plates, which aremoved into ver is connected, in order to operate the mechanism, as hereinbefore described. 1 Having thus described my invention, I -claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--a i. The combination, with the framing, aset ofspindles, and a ring or traverse rail, ot' a series of separator-plates, a turnable plateshaft upon which said plates are mounted, a counter-balance for said plates, an operatinglever secured upon said plateshaft, a rocker engaging said lever, a connecting-rod attached to said rocker, and a cam-bar connected to said rod, a cam engaging said cam-bar, and means, substantially as described, for holding said cam-bar in engagement with said cam, whereby the cam may indirectly vibrate the separatonplatcs, as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The combination, with the framing, a set of spindles, and a traversing ring or traverse-- rail, of a series ot separator-plates, a turnablc plateeshaft for said plates, a slotted operating lever secured upon said plate-shaft, a pivoted rocker provided with a stud working in the slot of said operating-lever, a connecting-rod attached to said rocker and a hinged cam-bar connected to said rod, a cam engaging said cam-bar, and means, substantially as described, for maintaining said cam-bar in engagement with the cam, whereby the revolutions ofthe cam may serve to vibrate the scparatorplates, as and for the purpose herein described.
3. The combination, with the training and a set of spindles, of a series otseparator-plates, a turnable plate-shaft for said plates, a slotted operatinglever secured to said plate-shaft, a pivoted slotted rocker provided with a stud engaging the slot in the opeiatinglev'er, a connecting-rod provided with a pin working in the slot of said rocker, a hinged cam bar connected to said rod, and a cam engaging said cam-bar, a counter-weight or equivalent connected with said rocker for holding the cambarin engagement with said cam, substantially as herein described.

of a series of separator-plates, a set of plateshafts provided with slotted operatinglevers, a set of rockers independently pivoted and hinged together in pairs and provided each with a stud working in the slot of an operating-lever, one of said rockers provided with a connecting-rod and a cam-bar connected to said rod, and a camengaging said cam-bar, one of said rockers provided with a counter-weight attached thereto for holding the cam-bar in engagement with said cam, substantially as herein described.
5. The combination, with the framing, the spindles, and ring or traverse rails, ot' aseries ot' separator-plates, a set ot' plate-shafts for said plates, slotted operatinglevers secured to said shafts, a pair ot' rockers independently pivoted and hinged together, and each provided with a stud working in the slot of one of said operating levers, one of said rockers formed with a slot and a connecting-rod pro vided with a pin working in the slot of said rocker, a cam-bar pivoted to said rod, and a cam engaging said bar, the other said rocker provided with a counteuweight for drawing said rocker up, substantiallyas herein described.

7. The combination of the framing and the spindles, the ring or traverse rails, a series of separator-plates, the plate-shafts provided with hangers mounted on the frame, the slotted operating-levers secured to the plate-shafts, the indcpendently-pivoted rockers hinged together, the connecting-rod and hinged cambarsecured thereto, the cam engaging the cambar, the counter-weight and the pulley fixed to the frame, and the rope intern'iediate 0I' the rocker and counter-weight, substantially as herein described.

The combination, with the separaten plates and plate-shafts, the framing and the rockers hinged thereto, connections intermediate of the rockers and the plate-shafts, and the connecting-rod attached to one of said rockers and to the cam-bar, of the cam, the cam-bar engaging said cam, the adjustable post provided with the slot, the bindingscrew taking in said slot and attached to the machine-flame, the connecting-rod, and the rocker, substantially as described, whereby the bearing ot' the cam-bar against the cam may be regulated.
9. The combination, with the framing, aset ot' spindles, and a traverse or ring rail, of a series of separator-plates, 1.5, the turnable plate'shaft for said plates, the slotted operating-lever 20, the pivoted rocker 22, the connecting-rod 27, and the hinged cam-bar 30, secured thereto7 the cam 3l, engaging said cam -bar, and means, substantially as described, llor holding the cam-bar in engage ment with the cam7 substantially as herein described.
