SLEEVE-BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,212, dated June 7, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, Josnrrr BULOVA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sleeve-Button, of which the following is a specification. 1

This invention relates to a sleevebutton of the kind in which the shoe may be folded over to pass through the holes in the cuff. The button is so constructed that the pin which connects the shoe to the shank may be pushed out ofits seat if the parts are to be disconnected, but is prevented from spontaneous displacement by means of a projecting shoulder or rim. 4

The invention consists in the various features of improvement,hereinafter more fully pointed out.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top View of my improved sleeve button, showing the shoe folded. Fig. 2 is a section on line .90 00, Fig. 1, but showing the shoe not Fig. 3 is a section on line y y, Fig. 1, also showing the shoe not folded. Fig. 4 .is a vertical central section of a modification.

With particular reference to Figs. 1 to 3 the letter a represents the head of a sleeve-button rigidly connected to the shank I), that has a turned-over end or cam, c. This cam 0 is perforated for the reception of pivot 11, which connects the shank to the shoe. The shoe is composed of a lower' plate, a, which is bent npwardlyat its edge to inclose the edge of an upwardly-bulged or convex plate, f, as shown. In this way an upwardly-projecting rim or bead, g, is formed around the plate f. The plate f is cut out or slotted at its center to accommodate the shank b, and it is also perforated in a horizontal direction, as shown, for the accommodation of the pivot d, the perforation being open from end to end. pivot is pushed toward the rim 9, and is then slightly raised to clear such rim, after which the pin may be readily withdrawn. To facilitate such withdrawal of the pivot, its ends should be made somewhat tapering or pointed.

In Fig. 4 the perforation within the plate f is provided with two shoulders, h, against which the pivot abuts when the parts are in their normal position, and which prevent the automatic displacement of the pivot; but when the parts are to be disconnected a slight pressure upon the head a will push the pivot downward (against action of spring 13) to clear the shoulders, after which the pivot may be readily withdrawn.

The combination, in asleeve-bulton having head a .and shank b, of a pivot, d, passing through such shank, and a shoe provided with a perforation open from end to end, adapted to receive the pivot, and provided with a raisedrim or shoulder that extends partly over such perforation, substantially as specified.
