Be it known that l, JOHN F. FOLEY, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Separable Pins; and I declare thefollowing tobe a specitication thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings.

My invention is a separable jewelrylpin;

and it consists of a plate having a pin andd catch,and which is adapted to slidein a grooved box upon the back of the front plate and to engage therein by the action ofa spring.

In the drawings, A represents the front plate( ot' a jewelry-pin, which may be made in anyv design or style. A box, B, having a longitudinal groove, a, open at each end, is secured to the back of the plate A by solder or otherwise. A flat spring,l C, slightly bowed, is

fastened at one end oi' the plate A and extends f longitudinally within the box B, the other end being free.

The pin-tongue D is mounted by the usual` joint, b, to the plate E, and the shoulder c is placed as shown. rlhe plate E has the usual pin-catch, cl, and at that end a transverselybent edge or lip, e, of the same width as the plate E.

To unite the two parts of my separable jewelry-pin, I insert the lipped end of the plate E into the box B at the end thereof where the spring C is secured, and slide the plate E along within the box. rIhe catch dis sufticiently narrow to pass along the groove a of the box B, and the plate E, being wider than the groove a, is held in the box by the iianges of said box on each side of the groove.

.'While sliding along in the box the plate E,

coniined by the anges to a plane in its forward movement, depresses the spring G until the lip e has passed beyond the forward end of the box B, when, by the pressure of the spring C, now relieved, said lip e is forced outwardly, and by its engagement with the end of the box prevents the withdrawal of the plate E. At the same time the shoulder c of the joint butts against the opposite end of the box B, and the parts are thus securely fastened.

The advantage of this construction is, that the pin attachment is separable at will from the front or ornamental portion of the jewelry-pin. For this reason v the pin may be re Ypaired without danger to the front plate or ornament; or, it" the pin is broken, a new pin attachment may be separately procured and adjusted. By means ofthis contrivance a number of pin fronts vof dii-ferent styles and designs may be mounted upon the same pin attachment, which makes this invention particularly useful for shawl-pins or for any otherY purpose for which a variety of pin fronts or ornaments may be desirable.

This invention is adapted to other kinds of jewelry besides pins or brooches, and is also serviceable in ear rings or drops. By rigidly mounting the wire on the sliding plate and bending it in the proper shape I obtain a de tachable ear-wire which can. be replaced by another when it has become misshapen by continuous use, or it can be repaired'easily without damage to the knob orjewel.

I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.- The plate E, having a wire mounted thereon, in combination with the grooved box B, the plate A, and the spring C, arranged and operating substantially as described.

2. The combination of the plate A, the box B, having the groove a, the spring C, and the lipped plate E, having the pin-tongue Dk mounted loosely thereon, and the catchud, sub- 1 stantially as shown.

3. The combination of the plate A, the box B, the spring C, and the lipped plate E, havinga wire mounted thereon, substantially as specified. 4. In an article ofjewelry, the combination of a front plate having on its rear surface a box containing a spring and a detachable sliding plate having a wire mounted thereon and engaged at will inl said box by the action of said spring, substantially as described. -JOHN F.
