Description

(No Model.)
L. B. MYERS.
TOY SLING.
No. 363,756. I Patented May 24,1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS B. MYERS, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
TOY SLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,756, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed April 13, 1886. Serial No. 198,726. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. MYERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fre mont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Slings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to toy slings. Heretofore these articles as generally constructed have been too large and ungainly to bc carried in the pocket.
The object of the present invention is to produce a toy sling which, while possessing all the necessary and desirable qualifications, shall be capable of being folded into a small and compact body, in order to facilitate its being carried in the pocket.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in a folding sling. Furthermore, the invention consists in various novel details of construction, as will be here inafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated three forms of devices by which the ob j ect of my invention may be attained.
In Figure 1 I have shown two pieces of wood or other suitable material so pivoted'at or about their centers as to render them capable of being folded compactly together. Fig. 2 illustrates a sling, preferably made of metal, in which the prong portion and the handle portion are made separately and connected by a joint of such construction as to allow the parts to be folded together. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate other forms of crotch, which may be folded to occupy a small amount of space. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of the prong portion and handle portion, showing the disk-joint.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, the letters A A represent pieces of wood, metal, or other suitable material pivoted together at a point, a, which is preferably about the center of the pieces, in such manner as to allow the same to be compactly folded together. The bands B of rubber are attached in any suitable or convenient manner to the upper ends of these strips, and the other ends of the bands are at tached to the missile-holder O.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a crotch made of two separable portions-namely, the upper crotch portion, D, and the lower handle portion, E. The crotch portion'is provided at a point about the center between its ends with a reduced part, (1, and the upper end of the handle is provided with a shoul- Ger-hook, e, which hooks over this reduced portion. The handle is provided with ashoulder, 6, which, when the parts are in position ready for use, rests against the shoulder d upon the crotch portion.
In Fig. 8 I have shown a sling in which the crotch portion and the handle are secured together by a joint of such form that the handle may be turned in one direction to fold it upon the crotch portion and be retained by a suitable shoulder against the movement in the other direction when the sling is in use. In this form the center portion of the crotch is provided with a depending flange, f, and with a pin, f which, when the parts are in place, passes through openings in these projections, and also through an opening in the upper end of the handle.
111 the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings the handle and prong are attached by means of a simple diskjoint-that is, the upper end of the handle and the lower end of the crotch are provided with the disk-faces 9, having a central opening, g, through which the pin passes, upon which the parts are free to turn. Thus it will be seen that the two parts may be turned upon each other in order to fold them together compactly, and at the same time any strain created in the use of the toy does not change the relative positions of the parts.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A toy sling in which the prongs of the crotch portion are pivoted and capable of folding upon each other, substantially as described.
2. The pieces A A, pivoted together and 'provided with slits or openings to receive the throwing band or bands, in combination with and such band or hands and with the missile-holder, In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 10 the whole comprisinga folding sling, substanpresence of two witnesses. tially as set forth.
3. A toy sling consisting of a crotch por- LEWIS B. MYERS. 5 tion and a handle portion made separate, secured together by a suitable pin forming a Witnesses:
pivot, each portion being provided with a CHAS. L. SEWARD, shoulder, whereby movement in one direction LEWIS O. MYERS. only is allowed, substantially as described.
