JACOB M. BAKER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
STAlR-PAD1 SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO'3G3,353, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed June 7, 1886.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB M. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, :residing at Boston, iu the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in StairI"ads,`of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists of a 'stairApad composed of an embossed material, preferably of the kind known as,chemical wood liber, and made up in two or more` thicknesses, and with or without an intermediate layer of iibrous or other suitable yielding` or elastic material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents my invention as applied to stairs or steps. Fig. 2 is a top view of the stair-pad on a somewhat larger scale. Fig. 3 represents a section of two thicknesses of the material co mposing a stair-pad. Fig. 4 represents three thicknesses of the same; and Fig. 5 is a sec tion of a pad with two thicknesses of the embossed material and an intermediate layer of some soft, fibrous, or other suitable elastic material.
A A represent two steps of a staircase.
I3 is a pad composed of two layers of the embossed material, as shown in Fig. 3, the depressions of one layer fitting-within the spaces between the depressions of the opposite layer.
In Fig. 4 I have shown three layers of the embossed material. More than three layers `may be used, if desirable, to increase the elasticity of the pad.
Serial No. 204,432. (No model.)
Fig. 5 shows twolayers of the embossed material, with an intermediate layer, D, of some fibrous or other suitable yielding or elastic lnaterial.
It will be seen that the intermediate material, D, as seen in Fig. 5, will be held in proper position and prevented from moving out of place by means of the projecting bosses or pro jections on the upper and lower layers B of the embossed material.
s The edges of the layers composing the stairpad may be united by stitching with thread or iine Wire, or by any other suitable means.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. As a new article of manufacture, a stairpad consisting of a plurality of layers of material having embossed projections, the pro-` jections of each upper layer being vertically over projections from the lower layer, substantially as described.
2. A stair-pad composed of two layers of embossed chemical wood fiber, with an' intermediate layer of fibrous or other suitable material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J ACO M. BAKER.
