SAFETY ILLUMINATING GAS DEVICE.
SPECIPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,343, dated May 17, 1887.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES HENRY Mus- GRAVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Illuminating-Gas Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety illuminating gas devices, wherein is provided a globe which surrounds the gasflame, and which is so protected by guards that the gas cannot be blown out, either by design or accident, while provision is made for the admission of the proper supply of air to support the gas-flame and for the purpose of lighting the gas. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gas-bracket with the globe and safety device in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The letter A designates the gas-bracket, or a branch of the chandelier, and is constructed of gas-pipe, with the plugcoek B and the burner O, in the manner usually employed.
At the nipple of the pipe a, and held in position by the threaded'burner O, is placed the curved guard-piece d, which serves to prevent the gas from being blown out from beneath, and is provided with the prongs d, to support the globe D at a distance sufficiently great from the said guard d to admit the necessary air for combustion, and at the same time, from the curved form of the said guard cl, prevent any draft of air from acting directly upon the flame.

To afford facility for lighting the gas, the trap-door d in the guard cl is provided, which is kept closed by the spring d.
The globe'D is constructed of any translucent material, and is held in position by the spring-prongs d. Ventilation is afforded at the top of the said globe by the opening (1, which is protected by any of the ordinary ventilation-caps, whereby the flame is protected from direct draft.
The manner of operating the device is as follows: The gas is turned on by turning the cock B. The trap-door d in the guard dis then opened, which will give access to the burner O for lighting, the spring (1 holding the said trapdoor closed when the operation is completed. Having fully described my invention and the manner of operating, what I claim and (16 sire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
' In a' safety illuminating-gasdevice, the combination of the supply-pipe a, the burner O, the globe D, cap (1, and the guard-plate d, provided with the prongs d, and an opening for lighting the gas,which is protected by the trap-door 0?, the said guard-plate d being secured by means of the burner O and the supply-pipe a, the trap-door d" giving access to the burner for lighting, and the prongs d serving to hold the globe D in a position whereby sufficient ventilation will be afforded without permitting a direct draft to act upon the flame, for the purpose set forth.
