Description
R. HAMILTON. Portable Sugar Evaporator.
No 36,294; Patented Aug. 26 I862.
' ZZZ/5272307 :m: NORRIS r-a rcns'co mom-mam, msmuarau, a. c. E
STATES IMPROVED PORTABLE SUGAR-EVAPORATOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,29 3, dated August 26, 1862. d
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, ROBERT HAMILTON, of Franklin, in the county of Johnson and State of Indiana, have invented anew and Improved Apparatus for Evaporating-Saccharine and other Fluids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side view of said apparatus; Fig. 2, a transverse section in the line 00 as of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section in the line 1 9 of Fig. 2.
It has been found in practice to be an extremely difficult matter to reduce sorghum: juice to the consistence of sirup or molasses, without injuring the flavor thereof by scorching or burning during the reducing process.
For a considerable length of time I have been experimenting with different evaporators for the purpose of obtaining such practical knowledge as would enable me to produce an apparatus that would be better adapted to the purpose of reducing the juice of the sorghum than'anything of the kind that I had ever seen or heard of, and I finally succeeded in producing an evaporator that has proved-in practice all that could be desired. This my improved evaporating apparatus I now desire to secure by Letters Patent.
In my said improved evaporator, which is represented in the accompanying drawings,A is an open evaporatingpan, and g g are the heating-fines which pass through the same, and through apertures in the heads thereof.
F is an outwardly-projecting flange from the front end of the pan A, and which embraces within it the mouths of all the fines g g of said pan.
13 is a furnace-box which has an opening in its inner side that will closely receive within it the flange F, and thereby enable the said furnace-box to beeombined with the pan A, in the manner representedin the drawings.
E is a flange projecting from the rear end of the pan A, and which embraceswithin the after ends of all the flues g g.
G is the breeching of the chimney D, which breeching slides closely over the flange E, as shown in Fig. 3.
The bottom of the furnace-box B is furnished with grate-bars k, and these grate-bars are I I placed at such a distance below the lower side of the flange F as shall prevent the fuel from coming in contact with the said flange. A slit between the upper portion of the flanged projection F and the head of the pan A receives the vertical sliding damper m, which'is of sufficient size to close the mouths of all the flues g 9 whenever it may be desired to do so. An opening in the outer side of the furnacebox B, opposite the mouths of the flanges g g, is closed by the hinged damper Z. It will therefore be perceived that it is impossible, by fair means, to bring the incandescent fuel into contact with any portion of the evaporatingpan A, and it will also be perceived that by opening the damper l the fire will be deadened within the furnace, and but a small portion of heat will then pass into the flues g g, and by clos ing the damper m, at the same time that the damper l is open, the heat of the furnace can be instantly shut off from the saidflues. If it should be desired to still further control and temper the heat that may be admitted to the fines g g, a portion of the said flues may be closed by means of the damper m, while the damper Z is either open or closed. The heat being applied to the fluid within the pan A solely by means of the gaseous products of combustion passing from the furnace through the flues g g to the chimney, and the arrangement of the dampers Z and at being such that the amount and intensity of the heat admitted to said flues is placed under the complete control of the operator,it will be almost impossible for any injurious effect to be produced upon any character of saccharine fluid that may be operated upon within said pan.
My improved evaporator may be placed upon a sled, H, for the purpose of enabling it to be easily transported from place to place. A suitable valve or cook, 9', should be placed near the bottom of one side of the pan A for the purpose of enabling the contents thereof to be easily drawn off. It would also be j udicious to mount the pan A in such amanner that it can be tilted for the purpose of aiding in discharging the contents therefrom.
Preparatory to being transported from place to place the furnace-box B, and the chimney D should be detached from their positions upon the evaporating apparatus and placed within the evaporating-pan A.
Having thus fully described my improved evaporating apparatus, what I claim therein with the flange F, and with the flues g geombining the dampers Z and m With the furnacebox 13, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
The above specification of my improved apparatus for evaporating saccharine fluids signed and witnessed this 23d day of June, 1862.
