Description

C. B. LOVELESS. GRATE.
Patented Aug. 5, 1862.
UNITED I STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
O. B. LOVELESS, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAT ES.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,098, dated August 5, 1862.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, O. B. LOVELESS, of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Hot-Air Grate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Inthe drawings, Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross-vertical section.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation. I
A represents the front plate of the grate; B, the grate; C, the hollow cast-iron columns; D, the cast-iron hollow fire-back; E, the hollow cast-iron air-chamber overthe grate and communicating with fire-back through pipes G; F, the hollow or'charnber in the wall below the grate; G, the chimney-wall; I, the smokefiue. a a are the cold-air registers at the bottom of the apparatus, one on each side of the grate. b 22 (shown in red lines, Fig. 1) are the cold-air passages from registers a a to the wall'chamber F, which is a continuation of the hollow of the fire-back D, both of them forming one chamber; 0, the regulatingregister for turning the heatedair into or out of the room containing the grate; K, the airpipe for conveying the heated air to an upper apartment; 6, a damper-valve in pipe K; H, the fender.
In constructing my invention the pipes O, air-chamber E, and fire-back D are made of cast-ironand of a shape substantially that set forth in the drawings.
It will be seen inthe drawings that the smoke-flue I is much contracted by building the brick back wall, G, quite near the pipes, air-chamber, and fire-back.
The brick wall below the grate is set somewhat forward of the fire-back D, so as to forn: a chamber between said wall and the lower rear part of the fire-back D. y
In the operation of my invention the cold air (which is always nearest thefloor) is received at the opened registers a a. Thence it passes through the passages b 1) into the chamber F, thence upward into the chamber of the fire-back D, thence through pipes O upward into the air-chamber E. The air in its passage through these pipes and chambers becomes heated by the action of the fire-which is made in the grate B. The air thus-heated is then discharged into the room through the register 0, or, if Wished, this register may be closed, damper e be opened, and the heated air be conveyed upward for the warming of aroom on the second floor. When the registersa a are closed, the grate acts as an ordinarygrate.
By this simple arrangement I am enabled to utilize the large amount of heat usually wasted in heating the fire-back, thus produc ing a cheap hot-air grate capable of a great saving in heat and fuel.
Having thus fully described my invention, 7
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cold-air registers a a, chamber D, vertical pipes C, chamber E, and hot-air register 0, in combination with the open fire-grate B, when constructed substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand in presence of witnesses.
G. B. LOVELESS.
Wit n esses: I
J. HUNT, THOS. M. BERRY.
