UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR F. CRANDALL, OF LEMARS, IOVA.
HARMONICA-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent ITo. 360,857, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed April 15, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. CRANDALL, of Lemars, in the county of Plymouth and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Harmonicas or Mouth-Organs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention consists of a round tube or box four and one-half inches (more or less) in length and three inches (more or less) in diameter, said tube or box to be made of tin, copper, or other material, said tube or box to have one or more sound-holes at each end and to be provided with a handle or support.
One end of the box is provided with lips to receive and hold a harmonica or mouth-organ, said lips to be formed by turning up a part of the cover of the end, thus leaving a cavity in the box, the interior of said box to be furnished with a circular or square fan hung upon a revolving axle parallel with the lips above described, and to be hung about the center of the box. Said fan is to be revolved by a crank on the outside of the box attached to the axle, or by a spring, or by the breath of the performer passing through the box while playing, reference being made in this specification 'to the drawing of said invention hereto attached and made a part hereof.
Serial No. 198,898. (No model.)
The object of this invention is to amplify and strengthen the tones produced by playing on a harmonica, and to give such tone greater volume and expression, and to give such tone a tremor at any time desired, which results are not otherwise attainable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of a hollow vessel or cup and a rotary fan within the cup, mounted upon a crank-shaft, and a harmonica placed at the end of said cup, so that by playing on said harmonica and turning said wheel within said cup a tremolo effect is produced, and by reason of the cup the sound is softened and at the same time is increased in volume, and, on the whole, made more pleasant to the ear.
2. The harmonica-holder consisting of a cup provided on the top with a metal lid, with lips cut and bent up from the lid to form a spring-clamp for holding the harmonica, substantially as set forth, and as shown in the drawing.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR l1. CRANDALL.
