Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER J. WORDEN, or CHARLOTTE, 1\IIOHIGAN,'ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF, TO EBER PERRY, or SAME PLACE.
REEL,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,399, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed June 1. 1886.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
3e it known that I, ELMER J. WoRnEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Eaton and State of 5 Mlchigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Reels; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled -in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked :hereon, which form a part of this specificaion.
1 This invention relates to belt-reels for thrashlng-machines; and the novelty consists in the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide as an attachment to thrashing-machines a convenient device for reeling and storing the power-belt when the thrasher is not in use.
I locate my reel-frame vertically adjacent to and behind one of the pulleys. The frame serves to guide the belt until it is tensioned taut upon the pulley.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this 0 specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a part of any ordinary and approved thrasher with my improved reel mechanism attached. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the reel and frame de 5 tached, taken at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail in section, and Figs. 4 and 5 perspective details, of the reel detached.
' Referring to the drawings, A designates the 0 body of any approved thrashingmachine, and B one of the power-pulleys thereof. 0 is the driving-belt.
- D designates a rectangular frame having a side plate, -D, provided with securing means,
5 as bolts d. The frame D is secured vertically to the body of the thrasher, adjacent to and behind the pulley B, and it furnishes journalbearings for a shaft, E, carrying exterior to'the frame a ratchet-wheel, F, and between the standards of the frame a reel, G.
vSerial No. 203,796. (No model.)
The reel G is composed of two heads, G G each connected rigidly to the shaft, and'themselves connected together by a semi-cylindrical plate, G To a projection, 9, upon the head G is pivoted or hinged a latch, H, having its free end arranged to engage a recess,
9 formed in the projection g of the head G' Within the recess 9", I form a side recess, 9". The recess 9 holds the latch efficiently, while when the belt is unwound the latch H is released.
The belt 0 in passing from the pulley is guided by the sides of the frame D and requires no guide-rolls. A pawl, f, serves to control the ratchet-wheel F, and to prevent the reel from unwinding, and a removable crank, I, allows the manipulation of the device at will.
The operation is obvious. The belt, being loosened from one pulley, is passed within the reel, and the latch passed to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The reel being turned, the tension of the belt forces the latch into the recess 9, where it will be held until the ten sion of the belt will be sufficient to hold the latch. The pawl f takes up and holds all slack until the belt is wound up and is brought toa tension upon the pulley B. In this position all the parts are held by the pawl. When it is desired to release the belt for use, it is 8c only necessary to disengage the pawl f, grasp the belt, and unwind the same from the reel. As the belt becomes unwound the latch releases itself by reason of the recess What I claim as new is- The reel G, comprising the two heads G G the plate G", and a latch, as H, arranged on the side opposite the plate G, the shaft E, a ratchet-wheel secured on said shaft, a pawl engaging said wheel, and a crank, I, all comc bined forjoint operation as specified.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELMER J. \VORDEN.
