THOMAS W. DOVVLING, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WASH-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,210I dated March 29, 1887.
(No model.)
To all whom z' may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS W. DOWLING, of Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, haveinvented new and useful Iruprovements in Vash-Boards; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin wash-boards; and the invention consists in providing the same with a guard at its upper end, that maybe set to ineline at a certain angle to either face of the board and retained in place without the intervention of springs, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view of a washboard, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 isa Vertical section of the same, showing the guard and its means of attachment to the washboard. f
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the standards, B the rubber, andCthe soap-board, all of the usual construction of wash-boards, except that there is no top rail upon the'upper end of and connecting the side standards, which latter project far enough above the up per edge of the soapboard to have suitable holes, ci, bored therein to form bearings, in which the ends of the rock-shaft D are properly journaled. A channel, b, is formed longitudinally in this shaft, such channel extend between the bearings orjouruals upon its ends.
E is the guard, it beinga thin piece of board, or sheet metal, if preferred, one edge of which is secured in such channel. The shaft between the standards is of two diameters in cross-sectiou, as shown in Fig. 2, the smaller being the shaft proper, while the larger forms a saddle carrying the guard-board, and has shoulders c, which limit the rotation of the shaft, as it is rocked iu either direction, by striking the upper edge of the guard, and thereby holding such guard atthe proper angle to perform its functions.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- The wash-board described, consisting of the standards A, double -faced rubber B, soapboard O above said rubber, the rock-shaft D, journaled in the upper ends of said standards and provided with longitudinal channel b, guard E, having one edge secured in said channel, the said shaft being formed of two different diameters, as shown and described, to form shoulders o, designed to engage the upper edge of the soap-board to limit the rotation of the shaft in either direction, substantially as set forth.
