AUTOMOBILE LITTER BAG SUPPORT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to supports for litter bags so that waste paper and other litter can be collected in a motor vehicle instead of being thrown therefrom to litter the landscape and roadside.
2. Description of the Prior Art Various supports for litter bags have been disclosed in the prior art with the majority of them requiring some sort of permanent attachment to the vehicle which leaves unsightly scars should the litter bag and its support be removed. Other supports depend upon magnetic attraction, suction cuts and the like and these do not provide sufficient strength in the support to withstand the poking of litter into the bag.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention comprises a rather simple adjustable rod which is mounted in a glove compartment box and engages the opposite sidewalls thereof adjacent the front of the box at the lower edge thereof. Flexible straps are secured to the rod and extend through the crack between the lower edge of the glove compartment door and the front lower edge of the glove compartment. The flexible straps are provided with loops at each end and a rod is positioned in the lower loops and is headed at both ends to prevent its being accidentally removed. The litter bag has a tube formed horizontally along its upper rear edge and the tube is removably engaged over the lower rod between the flexible straps to suspend the litter bag therefrom.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a prospective view of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of FIG. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the support rod.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts through the several figures the reference numeral indicates generally a litter bag support constructed in accordance with the invention.
The litter bag support 10 is adapted for use with a motor vehicle and more particularly with the glove compartment of a motor vehicle which is generally illustrated at 11 and forms a part of a conventional dash 12 thereof. The glove compartment 11 is provided with a door 13 having a lock 14 for securing the door 13 in closed position. Concealed hinges (not shown) conventionally secure the lower edge of the glove compartment door 13 to the dash 12 to permit the door 13 to drop to a generally horizontal position upon release of the lock 14.
A support rod generally indicated at 15 includes a tube 16 carrying a foot 17 on one end thereof and having a rod 18 telescoped into the opposite end thereof. A foot 19 is rigidly secured to the outer end of the rod 18 and a coil spring 20 is positioned in the tube 16 to normally urge the rod 18 outwardly therefrom so as to place outward pressure on the feet 17, 19. The support rod 15 is positioned within the glove compartment 11 at the front edge thereof with the feet 17, 19 engaging the side walls of the glove compartment 11. A flexible strap 21 has a tube 22 formed horizontally across the upper edge thereof and the support rod 15 is engaged therethrough and depends therefrom outwardly through the crack between the lower edge of the door 13 and the dash 12. Tubes 23 are formed on the lower end of the straps 21 and extend horizon tally thereacross. A rod 24 extends through the tubes 23 and is supported thereby. Removable heads 25 are secured to opposlte ends of the rod 24 to prevent the rod 24 from inadvertently slipping out of the tubes 23 on the straps 21.
A litter bag generally indicated at 26 includes a generally rectangular bottom integrally secured to a pair of upstanding generally rectangular side walls 28, 29. A generally rectangular front wall 30 extends upwardly from the bottom wall 27 and is secured to the sidewalls 28, 29 and a generally rectangular rear wall 31 extends upwardly from the bottom wall 27 and is secured to the sidewalls 28, 29. A flap 32 extends upwardly from the rear wall 31 and has a tube 33 formed along the upper edge thereof so as to extend horizontally there across. The tube 33 is mounted on the rod 24 between the flexible straps 21 to secure the litter bag 26 to the dash 12 of the vehicle.
When it is desired to remove the litter bag 26 to empty same one of the knobs 25 is removed and the rod 24 is slid endwise out of the tubes 23 and the tube 33 so that the litter bag 26 may then be taken to a trash receptacle to be emptied. To replace the litter bag 26 in the support the reverse procedure is followed.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without de parting from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
I. A litter bag support comprising first rigid means extending horizontally in releasable engagement with the glove compartment of a motor vehicle, second rigid means arranged parallel to and spaced below the glove compartment, flexible means having a horizontal tube on one end thereof slidably and releasably connecting said first rigid means and a second horizontal tube on the other end thereof slidably and releasably connecting said second rigid means, and a litter bag slidably mounted to and extending from said second rigid means, said flexible means solely defining the extend of slidable movement of the litter bag during use thereof, and said second rigid means allowing the litter bag to be slidably released therefrom.
