Abstract

A combined breakfront and dining table and chairs consisting of a rectangular cabinetlike support section, a breakfront section and a table-and-chair section. The breakfront section is mounted above and is spaced relation to the support section in which space a pair of table tops are positioned in end-to-end relation. Pivot pins permit the table tops to swing approximately 90* to side-by-side relation to form a dining table with legs supporting the ends of the tables and chairs normally positioned beneath the table tops on each side of the support section when the table tops are in end-to-end relation.

//V VE N 70/? ROCCO E. MARINO COMBINED BREAKFRONT, DINING TABLE AND CHAIRS This invention relates generally to an article of furniture, and is more particularly directed to a combined breakfront and dining table.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a combined breakfront and dining table and chairs which can be converted readily from one to the other but is normally utilized as a breakfront positioned against a wall and occupying a very small area in a room.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a highly decorative article of furniture that is normally used as a breakfront, bar or cabinet having certain parts that swing to a position to form a dining table with chairs that may accommodate as many as eight people.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a beautiful article of furniture that is a space saver for small homes and apartments, wherein dining space is at a minimum, and which is used as a breakfront normally and is easily converted into a large dining table with chairs.

With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral l0 refers to my combined breakfront and dining table consisting of primarily three sections, namely, a support section S, a breakfront or cabinet section B and a dining table section D.

The support section S consists of a rectangular cabinet like member having a bottom wall 11 supported above the floor by members 12, a top wall 13, sidewalls 14, rear wall 15 forming a compartment 16 which is enclosed by a pair of hinged doors 17.

Secured to the outer surface of the top wall 13 at its midportion is an elongated support and spacer member 18 on which a shelf 19 is positioned. The shelf 19 which extends the full length of the furniture 10 forms the base of and supports the breakfront B as best shown by FIGS. I and 3. It is to be noted that the construction and design of the breakfront B may be varied and as decorative andfunctional as desired. Here by way of illustration there is shown the breakfront B as having a midportion consisting of vertical tier of shelves 20, with a door 21 hinged along its lower edge portion. The door 21 is provided with side hinge brackets 22 that permit the door 21 to swing to an open and horizontal position and be received by 0 that extend upwardly and above the shelves and form an arch 27 at the top portion terminating on end walls 28 with shelves 29 extending between the walls 26 and 28.

In the space between the top wall 13 of the support section S and the shelf 19 there are pivotally and slidably mounted a pair of table tops 30. The table tops 30 normally lie in a plane in end-to-end relationship with pivot pins 31 secured to the top wall 13 of the support section S and extending upwardly through bores 32 in the table tops 30. The bores 32 are so positioned on the table tops 30 that when the table tops have swung out to their position for use as a table, the table tops 30 will abut against each other along their full lengths, as shown by FIG. 3, to form a continuous table. The ends of the table tops 30 are supported by legs 33 joined at their bottom ends by a crossmember 34. The lower surfaces of the crossmember 34 adjacent the legs 37 are recessed as at 44 for receiving a conventional roller 45 as shown by FIG. 9. At the ends of the table tops 30 are extension panels 35 hinged as at 36 with conventional support bars 37 pivoted below the table tops 30 and extension panels 35 to support the extension panels 35 horizontally when the latter form an extension of the table tops 30. By pivoting the support bars into coplanar relation with the legs 33, the extension panels 35 are permitted to swing downwardly to a vertical position as shown by FIGS. 1 and 2 to form the end walls of my combined breakfront and dining table 10. The table tope 30 are strengthened by members 38, 39 secured to the lower surface thereof. Positioned on each side of the support section S are chairs 39 that are conventional in construction except for having a combined flat backrest and rear legs 40 having a decorative outer surface that is in conformity with the-design of the doors 17 of the support section. The chairs 40 are normally placed in coplanar relation with and alongside the doors 17 as shown by FIGS. 1 and 2.

My combined breakfrontjand dining table 10 is normally used as a breakfront as shown by FIGS. 1 and 2. As a breakfront the article of furniture 10 is positioned against a wall occupying the usual minimal space of a breakfront. When it is desired to convert the latter for use as a dining table, all that need be done is remove the four chairs 39 from their position in front of the combined breakfront and dining table 10, and swing the table tops 30 about their pivot pins 32 on their rollers 35 until they abut each other and ""e at approximately right angles with the breakfront section B as shown by FIG. 3 and the dotted lines in FIG). Then the extension panels 35 are swung upwardly and locked into horizontal position by the support bars 37. The chairs 39 are then placed about the perimeter of the dining table section D permitting the use of my combined breakfront and dining table as a dining table.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A combined breakfront and dining table and chairs comprising a substantially upright support member, a substantially flat member mounted above said support member in spaced relation thereto, a breakfront mounted on said flat member, a

Claims (1)

1. A combined breakfront and dining table and chairs comprising a substantially upright support member, a substantially flat member mounted above said support member in spaced relation thereto, a breakfront mounted on said flat member, a pair of substantially rectangular table tops slidably positioned in said space between said support member and said flat member, said table tops in a retracted position being in substantially spaced, end-to-end and coplanar relation, pivot means securing each of said table tops between said support member and said flat member, said pivot means being positioned adjacent inner end portions of said table tops and at a predetermined distance apart whereupon swinging said table tops substantially 90* in a direction toward each other, said table tops will abut in side-by-side relation to form a dining table and legs mounted at the outer ends of said table tops for supporting said table tops, an extension panel hingedly mounted on the end of each of said table tops, and chairs having a substantially continuous surface covering the backrest and rear legs adapted to form blending surfaces with breakfront when in a closed position.
