ORNAMENTAL' FABRIC.

Be it known that I, LEwIs FOREMAN FECHT- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of, New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Ornamental Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide, with pleasing effects, a means of holding down the edges or outlines of embossed figures or designs impressed in plush goods, and so render the embossing permanent and more clearly defined, besides adding to the ornamentation of the plush fabric.

Ordinarily, embossed designs on plush and other nappy fabrics will in time lose their ornamental effect, by reason ofthe pile ornap in the depressed portions of the embossed work resuming an erect position. Embossed designs, especially on plush-upholstered furniture, are also liable to become obliterated by wear.

In order to preserve the beauty of an embossed design on plush fabrics and similar nappy goods, and at the same time add somewhat to its ornamental effect, I run lines of stitching, as hereinafter set forth, along the edges of the depressed portions of the our bossed work, so as to hold the compressed nap or pile down and prevent it from becoming confused with the elevated portions of the design.

My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing, which represents a view of my improved embossed plush fabric.

Referring to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates a piece of embossed plush or nappy goods; 2, the elevated pile or nap constituting the uncompressed portion of the fabric; 3,

the depressed portions of the embossed design,

and 4 the stitching that is run along the margin of each depression 3, on one or both sides, [0 confine the compressed nap or pile and preserve the outlines of the design.

In carrying my invention into effect, I take plush or other nappy fabric embossed with various figures or designs, and by means of a pantographic embroidery-1nachine or other pressed design,.thereby confining the pressed nap and maintaining the out-line of the embossed work. It is obvious that for this purpose I can employ either a plain or an ornamental stitch, or I may run a line of embroidery along or in the depressed portions of the embossed design, the effect in confining the nap and preserving the design being the same in either case. The stitches t can be made with silk or other thread, and by a judicious selection of colors,either similar to or contrasting with the color of the embossed fabric, various ornamental effects can be produced.

An embossed fabric of this character will maintain its beauty and durability for a long time, involves but little additional expense, and will always present a pleasing appearance, whether employed for upholstering or other purposes.

What I claim as my invention is-- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an embossed fabric of plush or other nappy material having a line or lines of stitching along the margin of the depressed portion of the embossed design to confine the pressed nap, preserve the outline of the design, and assist in ornamenting the fabric, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, an or namental fabric of plush or other nappy material provided with embossed figures or designs and embroidered along the margin of the dc pressed portion of the embossed work to confine the pressed nap, preserve the outline of the embossed design, and enhance the ornamentation of the fabric, substantially as described. i

3. The method of ornamcnting and preserving the designs of embossed plush goods and other fabrics having a nappy surface, which consists in running a line or lines of stitching along the margins of the depressed portions of the embossed designs to confine the pressed nap and prevent it from resuming an erect position, substantially as described.
