UNITED STATES SAMUEL sonrnwonrn, or GONCORDIA, KANSAS.
PATENT. OFFICE.
KITCHEN-SAFE.
EPECIFICAIION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,947, dated March 8, 1887.
Application filed September 13, 1886. Serial No. 213,425. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Sou'rn WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concordia, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Kitchen'Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in kitchensafes; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1- is a perspective view of a kitchensafe embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the sifting device.
A represents a rectangular kitchen-safe, the back of which, at its upper end, is provided with openings B, by means of which it may be suspended on a wall.
0 represents a lower extension of the sale, which projects below the bottom D of the safe proper; and the sides E of the lower extension have their front edges inclined downwardly and rearwardly. To the front edge of the bottom F of the lower extension, C, is hinged a board, G, which is adapted to fold up against the inclined edges of the sides E, so as to close the front open side of the lower extension. Jointed arms H connect the ends of the board G to the sides E, the lower ends of the said arms being pivoted to the ends of the said board and the upper ends of the said arms being pivoted to the sides E. \Vhen the board G is closed against the front side of the lower extension, it is secured in position by means of hooks I, which are pivoted to the sides E, and engage eyes K, that project from the ends of the board G.
The safe is dividedinto three compartments, L, M, and N, by means of vertical walls, and the said compartments have funnel-shaped or inclined bottoms and dischargeopenings, to which they lead. The opening L to the compartment L is on the front side of the safe, and the opening N to the compartment N is also on the front side of the safe. The opening M for the compartment M extends through the bottom board, D, and communicates with the compartment or lower extension on the under side of the safe.
Immediately below the compartment L is a compartment or covering, 0, which is divided by a horizontal board, P. On top of the said board, and in the upper section of the cover 0, is placed a drawer, R, which is divided into compartments of a suitable size, and is adapted to receive the various spices which are used in cooking. A drawer-pull, It, is attached to the front end of the drawer. The front side of the cover 0 is closed by a door, S, which is hinged to the safe, and is provided with ahook or other suitable device, by means of which it may be secured when closed. The lower section of the cover 0 is adapted for the storage of baking-powders or other articles used in the preparation of food.
Projecting from the front side of the safe and communicating with the opening L is a spout, L Vertical guideways L are attached to the front side of the safe above the opening L, and in the said guideways is fitted a vertically-movable slide or cut-off plate, L, by means of which the opening L may be either entirely or partly closed. The compartment L is adapted to store sugar. In the upper side of the safe, above the said compartment and communicating therewith, is an opening, Z, having a cap or cover, Z, by means of which it may be closed.
Communicating with the discharge-opening of the compartment N is an inclined spout, N. Vertical guideways N are arranged above the said discharge-opening, and a cut-off slideplate, L, fits in the said guideway. The said discharge-spout, guideways, and cut-off slideplate are identical in construction with those provided for the compartment L and hereinbefore described. The compartment N is provided with an inlet-opening, n, in the top of the safe, and the said opening is closed by a cover or cap, a.
On the lower side-of the bottom board, D, of the safe are secured horizontal guideways T. A cut-off plate, U, fits in the said guideways, and is adapted to reciprocate horizontally therein, and the said cut-off plate is provided at one end with an opening, U, similar in size to the disoharge-openin g at the lower end of the compartment M. When the plate U is moved to one end of the guideways, it closes the discharge-opening of the compartment M, and when it is moved to the opposite end of the guideways the opening U registers with the dischargeopening of the compartment M, thereby permitting the contents thereof to be discharged. A, vertical annular collar, U, depends from the plate U, and surrounds the opening U, and to the said collar is attached a vertical cylindrical sifter, V, which is provided with a rotating stirrer, V. The said sifter is attached to the collar U and is locked thereon by means of a lug, V which projects laterally from the upper end of the sifter, and is adapted to engage the lower end ofa lug, U formed on the lower side of the plate U. By this means the sifter may be readily attached to the plate U or detached therefrom.
The compartment M is provided at its upper end with an inlet-opening, m, having a cover or cap, m, and the said compartment is adapted for the storage of flour. The compartment N is adapted for the storage of meal.
When the board G is open to a horizontal position and the plate U moved in its guideways so as to bring the opening U below the dischargeopening of the compartment N, the fiour from said compartmcntfalls into the sifter, and any suitable quantity thereof may be obtained by rotating the stirrers of the sifter. Theboard G forms a suitable tray, upon which the dough may be kneaded when making bread or cakes, and is also convenient to place cans and other cooking-utensils upon. If desired, the compartment 0 on the lower side of the safe may be providedwith shelves or pigeon-holes.
, The operation of my invention will be very readily understood from the foregoing description.
A kitchen-safe thus constructed will be found of great utility and convenience to housekeepers, is cheap and simple, and is very strong and durable. By providing the compartments L, M, and N with theinelined or funnel-shaped bottoms it will be readily understood that the entire contents thereof may be readily dis Charged.
I am aware that it is old in provisionsafes to provide a compartment or bin with an inclined bottom, having an outlet-opening, said opening being closed by a separate slide op with the compartment M, having the inclined bottom formed with the discharge-opening, of
the horizontal guideways T, the sliding plate having the opening surrounded by the downwardly-extending collar and thelugV and the removable sifter having the lug V", as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL SOUTHWORTH.
