UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ALFONSO I). GATES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO A. S. DEUTSOH, OF SAME PLACE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,986, dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed April 8, 1886. Serial No. 198,178.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFONSO D. GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monkeyrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved wrench; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the upper end of the wrench. Fig. at is a transverse section on line or m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the bolt-head, showing the locking device therein.
My improved wrench is preferably made with the handle a, stock b, and jaw 0 formed in a single piece of metal. The stock or body part b is provided with an angular chamber,
ti extendim its entire len th and a short distance into the fixed jaw c, where it connects with a circular orifice, b which passes out through saidjaw. The face of the stock is provided with a longitudinal slot, 6, opening into the chamber Z), and an opening, 0, at its lower end of the same width as the chamber to admit the movable jaw f, which is placed in the chamher through this opening. The jaw f has a shank, f, adapted to fit the chamber b, and is provided with groovesf f on its sides corresponding to the uncut facing on the sides of the slot 0, which projects inward toward the slot and, in effect, forms fianges, which serve to confine the jaw in the channel and hold it in working position. he head of the shank has a threaded aperture, f for the passage of the adjusting screwbolt g. This bolt preferably has its head formed integral with the stem, and in practice is inserted in the chamber through the orifice b in the fixed jaw or head proper of the wrench; but it is essential in the operation of the wrench that this bolt should be secured against longitudinal movement, while at the same time it is easily removable when occasion requires. To this end I make a cylindrical bore, axially therein through the head and stem of sufiicient depth to enter the chamber 1), at which point the (No model.)
bore is tapped by a lateral opening, g, which enters the chamber just within the uncut portion of the jaw about the orifice b This uncut portion of the jaw I utilize for securing the rod by inserting an L-shaped lockingpiece, It, through the openings g g to engage therewith, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and then by inserting a suitablyformed plug, i, preferably of wood, behind said piece it may be more or less tightly held therein, while the locking-piece itself secures the bolt against longitudinal play or movement in its bearings. If desired, the wooden plug 1; may be so firmly driven into the socket that no amount of usage will displace it; but if any possible inconvenience is experienced on this account a small iron wedge will answer to fix it firmly and permanently.
The manner of uniting the parts will be understood from the foregoing description, and need not be restated here.
I am aware that various expedients have been employed to hold the screwbolt against longitudinal movement; but I am not aware that any one has devised aconstruetion which enables the locking mechanism to be inserted through the head of the bolt and secured therein, and this I consider, broadly, to be of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-
l. A wrench consisting of a stock with an interior channel and an opening on one side, a handle, and a fixed jaw, in combination with a movable jaw, a screw-rod extending through an orifice in the fixed jaw into the movable jaw, and a locking-piece entered through the head of the screw-rod and engaging the inside of the fixed jaw with a plug to fasten the piece, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wrench, the stock and fixed jaw having a chamber and orifice, substantially as described, in combination with an adjusting-rod having an L-shaped opening therein, an L- shaped locking-piece in said opening, and a plug behind said piece in the axial part of the opening, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFONSO D. GATES. lVitnesses:
T. M. IRVINE, A. B. ALLEN.
