SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,728, dated February 15, 1887. Application filed January 19, 1884. Serial No. 118,115. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. MUNsING, of Rochester, Monroe county, New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cattle Ties and Halters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a plan of a cattle-tie showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the fastening on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the fastening at right angles to Fig. l, and showing the parts of the coupling separated. Fig. L is a section of one-half of the coupling, showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the coupling for the bitching-cord of the tie. Fig. 6 is a view of the side clamp of the loop.

My improvement relates to cattle-ties and halters made of rope, cord, or leather, and formed into a loop,which may either go around the head or the neck of the animal.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangemcnt,'as hereinafter described.

In the drawings, A is therope or cord for forming the loop,and B B show two bitching-cords attached to the ends of the loop and proceeding in opposite directions, being specially adapted for tying cattle.

If desired, but a single hitching-cord may be used.

The loop, as shown in the drawings, is specially adapted to lit around the base of the horns; but by making it larger it is adapted to t around the neck of a cow or horse.

My improvement is as follows:

O and D are two sockets which compose the coupling of the loop. They are secured on the rope in any desired way. At the right, in Fig. 2, a screw-thread, a, is shown, which screws on the end oi' the rope. At the left the socket is split, and sharp-pointed spurs a a secure the rope. In Fig. Llfthe end of the socket is divided, one part, b, forming a separate clamp, having a hook, c, that catches under a shoulder of the main part, being also armed with spurs. The sockets are secured fast in place by rivets d d.

The socket O is provided with a projecting thimble, f, which rests in the open head g of the other socket. arms, 7i 7L, with hooks it', which rest on the inside of the enlarged end g of the socket D, and are pressed apart by a coiled or other spring, 7c. TheV rear ends of the arms have right-angled lugs Z Z,which rest loosely in holes in the sides of the sockets, allowing proper play to the arms, at the same time keeping them in place. The socket C also has openings 'm m on two opposite sides, of sufficient size to allow the insertion of the thumb and nger to compress the hookarms. The socket AD has simply two slots, a a, of considerable length, on two opposite sides, through which the hooks i i pass to engage the parts together.

The hook-arms may be of different forni and be differently attached to the socket O and still serve the same purpose.

The coupling G ofthe bitching-cord B may be of any desired kind, but, as shown, consists of a strap of metal, having at one end an eye, p, to receive the rope, and at the other end a socket, r, which receives the end of the hitching cord, the parts being secured by spurs or teeth on the inside of the coupling and a rivet. If desired, the coupling may be made in two parts, forming a clamp.

P, Figs. l and 6, is a clamp made in two parts, which is clamped on the cord forming the loop, for the purpose of shortening said loop. The parts constituting the clamp are secured together by a screw, fw, or any suitable means. The main loop is made large enough to go around the largest head or neck. It can then be contracted to fit the smallest by means of the clamp. This device adapts the loop specially to the horns of animals, as there is considerable difference between the spread of the horns in different animals, and especially in those of different ages.

The principal novelty in my invention is a loop adapted to fit around the horns, a coupling in the loop enabling it to be opened and closed, a clamp on the loop by which it can be taken up and let out,and one or more bitchingcords attached to the loop for the purpose of fastening the animal.
