THREE WHEEL RIDING GANG PLOW.
Patented Feb.
I C I ATTORNEY N. PETERS. Phma-Lilhn m hor, wnmn mn, D4 (2.
UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. BUTLER, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
TH REE-WHEEL RIDING GANG-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,573, dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed June 21, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BUTLER,- a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvcments in Three-Wheel Riding Gang- Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of improvements in the construction and arrangements of the contrivances 0f three-wheel riding gang-plows for enabling two or more plows to be used in the gang; also, for regulating and controlling the vertical inclination of the points of the plows; also, for regulating and cont-rolling the depth of the furrows by, the cranked axle of the main, wheels, one of which runs in the furrow, and also for regulating and controlling the position of the tongue and the evener relatively to the plows, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view. of my improved wheel-plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the plows and plow-frame and section of the axleadjusting frame on thelinex x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the machine with the axle sectioned on the line y 3 Fig. 1.
I make a beam-frame consisting of two or more longitudinal parallel beams, a, according to the number of plows b which I wish to use, together with the requisite cross-timbers c or other stays, d, to which I attach a plow, b, and colter e, for each beam by suitable stocks or standards, as commonly done, and I mount said frame on a caster-wheel, f, at the rear and on the lifting-frame at the front, said frame consisting of (preferably) two arms, g, to each beam pivotally supported at the middle on the axle h,crosswise thereto, and all connected at the frontends together by the bar 2', to which and to one of said arms the lifting ratchet-sector j is rigidly attached. Thebeams are pivoted to the rear ends of these arms at 70, and with the ratchet-sector there is a pawllever, l, and pawl m, pivoted and turning loosely on the axle for shifting the liftingframe, and having anotched holding-rack, n, located on one of the beams in suitable proximity to the drivers seat 0, for being used conveniently by the driver thereon to shift the lifting-frame for raising and lowering the front Serial No. 205,752. (No model.)
I end of the beanrframe by the lever, and setting it by the rack, according as it maybe desired to adjust the points of the plows aszto the vertical pitch or inclination.
v In this example of my invention I have represented two beams in the beam-frame for two plows with one set of cross-timbers, c, and stays d, and two sets of arms, 9, in the liftingframe; but if I employ three beamsthe third beam will be connected as these are by other cross-timbers and stays, two more arms will be employed in the lifting-frame, and the lifter-frame bar 7;, connecting said arms, will be suitably extended, and the extension, the additional lifting-arms, and the cross-timbers and stays for the additional beam may all be detachably connected, so as to be attached or disconnected at will, if desired. In such case the axle would be extended on the land side to enable the additional plow to be connected on that side, for the relative position of the plow on the other side to the wheel that runs in the furrow must be the same whether two or more plows are used in the gang.
It will be seen that in a gang-plow that is variable as to the number of plows to be used in the gang it is important to have the tongueand-evener connection so that they may be shifted laterally accordingly. It is also desirable to some extent, whether variable or not as to the number of the plows, for regulating the draft under varying conditions of soil, depth of the furrows, number of animals in the team, and for other reasons, for which, and also for a contrivance to adjust the cranked axle to vary the wheels according as both run on the land or one in the furrow, I have arranged the axle and draft-regulating frame, consistingof the arms p, parallel barsq, connecting said arms, and the evener-connecting plate 3, on the axle, pivoting the arms thereto outside of the lifting-frame, and to this frame I connect the tongue t by a clip, a, fitted to the parallel bars q, so as to shift along them, together with a series of holes, '0, in the evenerplate for enabling the tongue and evener to be shifted to and be set together in different positions along said bars, when they may be secured by the clevispin of the evener or by other suitable means for the draft-regulator, and with this frame I also arrange a lever, '20, on the axle by the side of one of the arms, and rigidly connected to the axle, with a stop-latch, m, on it, and a notched sector, y, on the arm, so that by shifting the lever up or down the axle will be turned accordingly, and may be secured in any position by engaging the latch with the sector.
W'ith the caster-wheel I have arranged a shifting-lever, s, which is pivoted near about its middle to the beam-frame and ranges forward to a point a little in front of the drivers seat, where it terminates in a vertical handle, a, for shifting it along a notched stop, I), as may be required for the guiding of the ma chine. The rear end of this lever may be connected to the pivot-stock of the caster-wheel in any approved way; but I have in this case employed the forked arm 0 on the pivot-stock, with the end of the lever lodged in the fork.
With these improvements I have provided a riding gang-plow of very simple and cheap construction, having all the requisite adjustments, and being very easy and convenient to operate,-and by the simplicity of the construction being adapted for durable service.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a riding-plow, of the beam-frame consisting of two or more beams, a, each having a plow, b, and being connected by suitable cross-timbers and stays, the casterwheel carrying the rear end of the beam-frame, the cranked axle, the lifting-frame pivoted on the axle and having the front end of the beamframe pivoted to its rear end, and the pawl-lever and pawl adapted for the turning of the lifting-frame on the axle for the raising and lowering of the beam-frame, said beam-frame being pivoted to the lifting-frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the beam-frame and cranked axle having one crank only, of the lifting'frame consisting of the cross-arms g, pivoted on the axle, and lifter-bar t, conmeeting said arms and having the ratchet-sector j, attached to one of said arms, together with the pawl-lever pivoted on the axle, the pawl, and the holding-rack for the lever, substantially as described.
- 3. The combination, with the cranked axle having one crank only, beam-frame, and plows, of the draft-frame consisting of arms 1), parallel bars q, evener-plate s, and the adjustablyconnected tongue-clip u, said evener-plate having a series of holes for the adjustment of the evener, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the cranked axle having one crank only, beam-frame, and lifterframe pivoted on and connecting the beamframe to the axle, of the draft-frame having the axle fitted to turn in it and provided with the notched sector, the crank-shifting lever rigidly attached to the axle, and thestop-latch of the lever, substantially as described.
5.- The tongue pivoted to the clip a, fitted adjustably along the draft-frame, in combina tion with the evener-plate, also attached to said draft-frame and adapted for shifting the evener along it with the tongue, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 22d day of May, 1886, in pres ence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. BUTLER.
