`UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
CHARLES w. HAsELToN AND eRANviLLE r. FELT, on PETERBoRoUGH, N. H.
sEAM-Paessme MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent o. 357,482, dated February 8, 1887. Application filed June l5, 1886. Serial No. 205.269. (No model.)
Be it known that-we, CHARLES W'. HAsEL TON and GEANvILLE P. FELT, of Peterborough, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, haveinvented certainnew and useful Improvements in Seam-Pressing Machines, of which the following is a specification. Our invention relates to seam pressing'or rubbing machines employed in the manufacture ot' boots and shoes, and has for its ob- `ject to provide a contrivance'of that character which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, and by which the seam maybe guided with exactness and certainty to the proper point on the pressing or rubbing devices, and be thoroughly and smoothly pressed down or flattened in the desired man- 11er.
To these ends our invention consists in the improvements which we will now proceed to describe, so that those skilled in the art may be able to make and use the same, the invention being particularly set forth in the claims appended to the description.
Of the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a front view of the machine constituting our invention. Fig. 2 represents anend view thereof'. Fig. 3 represents a section on the linex :c of Fig. l. Fig. 4 represents a section on the line y y of Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and Gare diagrammatic views designed to represent the seam in the process of and after being operated upon. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all of the figures.
a represents the bed of the machine, having a post or standard, b, secured thereto or formed integral therewith, from the upper end of which projects an arm, c, supporting a shaft, d, so that the latter may be revolved therein.
To o`ne end of shaft d the driving-pulley e is keyed or otherwise .properly secured, which pulley is adapted to receive a belt or band driven by any suitable prime motor, therebyT communicating motion to the movableparts of the machine. To the end of shaft d opposite that at which the driving-pulley e is afxed thereto is secured a roller, having a rounded groove or groove of convex shape formed in its face or periphery, which groove is transversely ribbed or iiuted in its center, as shown in Figs. l and 6, and for a purpose to be presently explained.
g represents a strip of metal suitably secured to the side of arm c at its forward end, to the end of which strip is relnovably attached a guide, h. consisting of a piece of metal curved rearwardly toward a point underneath rollerf, and having a square groove, t', formed 4in its under face, the lower sides or faces of the walls of which groove are rounded or Hare outwardly and downwardly, as seen in Fig. l.'
Extending outward from post b between the bed a and arm cis another arm, j; the forward end of which is fitted toguide andsupportavertical bar, 7c, the upper end ot' which is forked, and the upper ends of the arms of t-he fork are adapted to support the axle or journals of a roller, Z, having a convex periphery conforming substantially t'o the convex groove formed in the periphery ofthe rollerf. Said rollerZ is supported directly under rollerf, and so that the rounded face of the former will extend into iiie groove formed in the'face of the latter.
Bar 7c has a screw-threaded hole formed in its lower end, into which the screw-threaded stem m of the footnis fitted. rllhe foot n rests upon a step, o, of rubber or similar material, secured to the bed a, andsaid foot has its outer surface or periphery preferably roughened, so that bar Zr, carrying roller Z, can be adj usted vertically to a limited extent by the turning of said foot, as will be readily understood. l
A bar or strip, p, secured by screws or in any other suitable manner to the forward end of armj, is provided on its upper end with a guide, q, consisting of an invertedVshaped piece of any suitable length, having lthe forward end of its upper edge extending into the square groove t' of'guide Zz., as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The operation of our invention may now be explained and readily understood. The parts seamed together, as represented in Fig. 5, are placed astride the guide q, (which,'in addition to operating as aguide, serves as a bed'or support for the materia-1,) so that the projecting portions s of the seam will enter groove t' in guide h, and be thereby maintained in vertical position as it is drawn between rollers f Z,
IOO
as shown in Fig. 6, and all liability ot' onepart of the seam being pressed upon the other or the two parts being unduly spread apart is avoided.
The ribbed or iluted character of the face of' the groove in roller f serves to draw or feed the seam through between` the rollers with certainty, and the rubber step o operates to compensate at a uniform degree of tension for any unevenness in the thickness or bulk of the material comprising the seam.
The degree of pressure on the seam can be regulated to a nieety by means of the screw'- threaded connection of the foot a with the bar k, which supports the lower presser-roller, Z. By this means the distance between the two presserrolls is regulated for seams of varying bulk, resulting from the use of material ot' dit'- ferent thicknesses.
Guide h is made removable to render it interohangeable with others, each having a groove, t', of different size or width, thus permitting the machine to be equipped with a guide, l1, having a groove, 1', suitable to the size or bull; of the scatti to be pressed.
le claim- 1.- A seam-pressing machine provided with two rollers arranged with their peripheries 'opposite to each other, supports for said rolle'rs, mechanism consisting of a foot provided with a screw-threaded shank having a screwthreaded connection with the support of one of the rollers for adjusting the support of the latter rollei` to bring its periphery nearer to or remove it farther from the periphery of the other roller, a step of rubber or analogous material for said foot to rest upon, guides for conducting the material to bepressed in proper position between said rollers, and mechanism, substantially as described, for rotating one of said rollers, all arranged and operating as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
2. A seam-pressing machine provided with two rollers arranged with their peripheries or faces opposite to each other, mechanism, substantially as described, for rotating one of said rollers, and guides /L and q, for conducting the material tobe pressed in proper position between the rollers, guide It being provided on its face with the single square groove i, and guide q being in form substantially that of an inverted V. as and for the lpurposes hereinbefore set forth.
3. rIhe combination, with roller Z, of bark, having a screw-threaded hole formed in its lower end, foot n, having a screw-threaded stem, m, adapted to be screwed into the screwthreaded hole ofthe bar, and step o, of rubber or analogous material, for the foot to rest upon, whereby the position of said roller may be adjusted vertically and the yielding pressure ofthe step rendered regular, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
4. The combination of the guides h and q and their supports, the former guide being provided on its face with the square groove z', and the latter guide being of an inverted-V shape, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our naines to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of June, 1886.
CHARLES W'. H ASELTON. GRANVILLE P. FELT.
