Description

(No Model.) V G. S. BONNE-Y.
PIPE VISE.
No. 357,306. Patented Feb 8, I887.
\ UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
CHARLES S, BONNEY,\ OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PIPE-,VIISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,306, dated February 8. 1887.
Application filed April 26, 1886. Serial No. 200,236. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, CHARLES S. BONNEY, a citizen of the city and county ofPhiladelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain .Improvements in Pipe-Vises, of which the folsive; and to this end it consists in combining journals in the said jaws, one of which is with eitherjaw ofa vise composed of two jaws, one or both movable 011 a'connectingbar, a double eccentric pivoted minor jaw, so arranged with relation to the other parts of the device that it will always adjust itself automatically to grasp the pipe or rod to be held.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved pipe-vise; and Fig. 2, asection through the movable jaw and minor eccentric jaw, showing the construction and arrangement of said parts.
To the base B is secured the fixed jaw D, of the usual form, recessed longitudinally to fit and receive the bar A,which slides through it, and to the end of this sliding bar is secured the movable jaw H. These jaws are moved toward each other by means of a screw-bar, F, and a handle, E, the screw-bar passing through screw-threaded, as shown in Fig. 1. The movable jaw H is recessed at P, to admit one end of a minor jaw, K, working on the pin M passing through it and themovable jaw H;
and back of this jaw K, and pressing against its rear end, is a fiat spring, N, the tendency of which is to keep the jaw K in position shown, though it is free to swing in the slot P vertically on pivot, and so adj ustitself to firmly grasp the article to be held. Its outer face is in the shape ofadouble eccentric, and its motion under pressure due to this construction is shown in Fig. 1, its said face being serrated or toothed.
The operation is such that when a pipe or rod is screwed up between the jaw D and the minor jaw'K of the movable jaw H any attempt to turn the pipe in either direction will cause the minor jaw K to turn on the pivot and the inclines of its face to grasp the rod or pipe with increasing firmness.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the fixed jaw D and sliding'jaw H, of a minor pivotedjaw, K,with its spring N, said minor jaw having a grasping-surface in the form of a double incline toward the center, said parts being constructed, combined, and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 21st day of April, A. D. 1886.
