Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE9 DUTEE WILCOX, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEEVEFASTENERS..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,721, dated June Q4, 1862.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUTEE WILCOX, a citizen of the United States of America, andaresident of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new or Improved Sleeve OatohUp or Fastener; and
I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and rep` resented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a perspective view of my said sleeve catchup as it appears when open; Fig. 2, a side View as closed. Fig. 3 is an end View of it as open. l
The particular object of asleeve catch-up is to fasten the sleeves of a childs dress when looped orcontracted at the shoulder. It may also be employed as a Wristband-fastening.
In my sleeve catch-np or fastener the metallic back or body part A can be made thick, so as to be inelastic and capable of having stones set or affixed in it. The metallic tongue B at one of its ends is hinged to the said body at or near one end of the latter. The said tongue is bent or bowed near each extremity, as shown at b c` and is made thin, so as to be capable of being sprung either on or off a hooked guard,
`C, which is affixed to and projected from the other end of the body A, as shown in the drawings. The part C is not quite so wide as the tongue, in order that such part C may enter a notch, d, made in the outer end of the tongue` such notch serving to maintain the parts B and C in their proper relations to each other while the hook c may be in the act either of passing on or off the guard-hook C. Gonsiructing the part c of the tongue wider` than the guard-hook enables a person to readily seize the part c between his thumb and forefinger of one hand and to nnclasp or open the catch-up, while the body part/A is held by his other hand.
In order to clasp the tongue B over the guardhook O, we have only to press the body A and the tongue B together, in which case, provided the pressure be sufcient, the whole tongue will spring so as to cause the part c to hook on the guard-hook CQ Vhile the hooks c and C are in engagement the latter will operate as a guard to prevent the expansive power of the sleeve from unfastening the catch-up.
I lay no claim to the inventions which are the subjects of the United States Patents numbered 11,792 and 17,413, as my sleeve catch-up or fastener, although similar to such in some respects, materially differs from them in others7 orboth in construction and operation.
I claim- My improved sleeve catch-up or fastener as made with the duplex-hooked spring-tongue B and with the guard-hook O, constructed, arranged, and applied to the body part A in manner and so as to operate substantially as specified.
DUTEE VILCOX.
