Description

R. D. DODGE.
Wheel-Cultivator.
No. 35,673. Patented June 24, 1862 N-PETERS PHOTV-LITHOGHAFMER, WASNIHQ'ION, D c.
Y described.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
B. D. DODGE, OF ADEL, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,673, dated June 24, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. D. DODGE, of Adel, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and ImprovedOultiv-ator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of the same.
Similarletters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts. i
The object of this invention is to connect the plows of a cultivator to each other and to the main frame, so that each plow can accommodate itself to the inequalities of the ground entirely independent of the others, and that a side motion canbe imparted to the plows or to a portion of them, so that in cultivating both sides of a hill can be reached as close. to the plants as may be desired. A
Theinvention consists in certain novel means of suspending and connecting the plows, as will be hereinafter more fully explained and My cultivator, which is intended to straddle one row of corn, sugar-cane, or other hill or drill plants, consists of one main central beam, A, which is attached to a frame, B, that rests on the axles G of the wheels D. To the rear end of this beam the drivers seat E is secured, and its front end connects with or forms the draft-pole.
An arched pendant, F, is secured to the under side of the beam A a certain distance in front of the frame B, and two braces, A, strengthen this pendant in its position. To each end of the arched pendant Fa stirrup, b, is attached by means of a pivot, c, and the loose ends of these stirrups connect to the secondary beams G G which carry the plows. The beams G are rigidly attached to the outer ends of the stirrups b, and they extend back over the axles 0, being guided by slots in the uprights d of the frame B. They are raised and lowered by means of treadles e, which are pivoted to the uprights d and the front ends of which connect with said beams by means of rods or linksf, their rear ends being in acon venient position to be operated with the feet I from the drivers seat. When raised clear up the beams G are retained by hooksf, that are pivoted to the frame B. Standards 9, connected to these beams, carry the plows h.
The beams G are suspended at their front ends from hooks 'i at the inner ends of the stirrups b, and their rear ends connect with standards g, the upper ends of which are pivoted to a cross-bar,j, whereas their lower ends carry the plows or scrapers h. The cross-barjrests on a hand-lever, 7c, which is pivoted at its front end to an upright, I, rising from the main beam A, and the rear end of which forms the handle, which-can be conveniently reached from the drivers seat.
By means of the hand-lever the scrapers h can be raised or depressed, and, furthermore, a side motion can be imparted to the same in either direction. The ends of the cross-barj are provided with several holes, so as to be able to adjust the scrapers closer together or farther apart, as may be desired.
The standards 9 connect with the standards 9 by means of guide-bars m, one end of which is rounded and placed loosely into a bracket rising from the standards 9, while their other ends are pivoted to the standards g. Said guidebars are provided with slots fitting on arms 01., that are rigidly fastened to the inner sides of the beams G. The guide-bars m and arms a compel the beams G G to retain always the desired position in relation to each other.
This cultivator is intended to be used with two horses or, other draft-animals, and it can be used with advantage for cultivating standing corn, cotton, sugar-cane, 860., and for all other plants that are planted in bills or drills.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arrangement of the stirrups I), connecting the front ends of the beams G G, in combination with the treadles c, hand-levers 7c, and guide-bars m, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
n. D. DODGE.
